Keeper is an atmospheric, story-rich RPG where you'll explore an open world, build your character, and tackle challenging quests. You'll navigate mysterious environments, solve environmental puzzles using your light, and interact with unique companions like Twig. The game features a day/night cycle controlled by the Horologe and requires you to restore ancient mechanisms, like the Liminal Gate, by rotating sun and moon symbols and collecting medallions.
This guide covers the entirety of Keeper, from initial installation and beginner tips to advanced strategies for building your Swiftbow Hunter. We'll provide detailed walkthroughs for key quests such as The Dragon's Hoard and Echoes of the Past, and help you overcome obstacles like navigating the watery depths of Act 2, breaking through Wither blockades in the Slime Grotto, and utilizing pollen to traverse the Pollen Fields and Pollen Falls. We'll also cover the mechanics of interacting with the environment, like making kelp grow for creatures or using smoke streams for traversal.

Controls
Learn Keeper controls: use the mouse to move the cursor, left-click to select rooms, spells, traps, and creatures.
You can move the cursor around with the mouse. Use the left mouse button (LMB) to select rooms, spells, traps, and creatures. Hover the cursor over a specific part to get information about that topic.
- Hovering the cursor over elements provides detailed information.
- The left mouse button is your primary interaction tool.
Control panel
Navigate and utilize the Keeper control panel effectively. Learn about dungeon view, map icons, payday, research, and creature management.
The control panel in Keeper provides essential information and management tools for your dungeon. The left pane displays your dungeon view, indicating the four cardinal directions relative to your map's rotation, helping you orient yourself and always find north. A dotted line points back to your Dungeon Heart for easy location. Around the map, you have five options: the Map icon for the overall land map, the 'C' key to toggle computer assistance, the 'Q' key for game options and quitting, and the '+' and '-' keys to zoom the mini-map.
Below the dungeon view is a panel with five tabbed sections:
| Tab | Description |
|---|---|
| Info tab (Question mark) | At the top, toggle 'Imprison' and 'Flee' options (requires a Prison). Below this, you'll see the remaining time until the next payday, when your creatures must be paid. The total amount due is shown in red. Two more gauges track research progress for new spells and manufacture progress for traps/doors. Four tabs below show active Keepers in the region, detailing their room and creature counts. The bottom of this tab has a '?' query option; clicking it turns your cursor into a '?' to get information on creatures (friend or foe) and automatically centers the screen on their movement. |
| Room tab | Displays buildable rooms. Raised icons indicate built rooms, while '?' icons represent rooms needing research in the Library. The bottom-right icon allows you to sell rooms by changing your cursor to a '$' icon. |
| Spell tab | Shows all researched spells. '?' icons represent spells that still need to be researched. |
| Manufacture tab | Lists researched traps and doors. Traps are in the top two rows, doors in the third. The '$' icon can be used to sell traps (which yields some money) and doors. |
| Creature tab | Organizes your creatures by activity: idle (left), working (center), and fighting (right). Clicking a number selects creatures from that activity. Right-clicking changes the view to that creature. Clicking an icon selects the most experienced creature of that type. |
Options menu
Learn how to navigate and customize Keeper's options menu, from saving your game to tweaking visual and sound settings for the best experience.
Hey there! So, you're looking to get a handle on the game's menus, huh? No worries, it's pretty straightforward. When you need to pause the action or change some settings, just hit the 'Q' key in the top left corner of your screen, or press 'Esc'. This'll pop up a small menu with a few handy options.
From left to right, you'll see:
- Load game
- Save game
- Set visual options
- Set sound options
- Set computer assistance
- Quit game
Load and Save Game
These two are pretty self-explanatory. You can save your progress across 8 different save files, so you can jump back in right where you left off whenever you need to. Just pick a slot, and your game will be stored safe and sound.
Set Visual Options
This is where you can really fine-tune how the game looks and runs. Most machines built after 1997 should handle the game with no problem, even on the best settings. You've got a few tweaks here:
- Shadows: Decide how many shadows can appear on a single object, from 0 up to 4.
- View distance: This controls how much of your dungeon map you can see at once.
- Field of view: You can choose to rotate the camera in smooth increments or in 90-degree steps.
- Wall height: Adjust this to make your creatures stand out better against the dungeon walls.
- Gamma correction: Tweak the brightness of your dungeon view, going from dark and moody to nice and bright.
Set Sound Options
Here's where you can balance your audio. You can adjust the volume for the Background Music (BGM) and the Special Effects (SFX), which includes sounds and voice-overs, completely independently. Get that perfect mix going!
Set Computer Assistance
Honestly, I usually skip this one because it can sometimes be more of a hassle than a help, but if you're curious, there are four types of AI assistance you can try out. They're color-coded from left to right:
- Red (Aggressive): This AI will actively build rooms, use spells and traps, and try to attack enemies.
- Yellow (Defensive): This one also builds rooms and uses spells/traps but won't initiate attacks.
- Green (Construction): This AI is solely focused on building rooms.
- Blue (Movement): This AI will only slap creatures around and move them.
To see this in action, click on the little 'c' icon near the map radar. It's interesting to see what they do, even if I don't rely on it myself.
Quit Game
When you're done playing for the moment, just select the trashcan icon. This will exit the game and take you back to the main options screen, ready for your next dungeon-delving session.
