Discover the groundbreaking new mechanics in Civilization VII, including distinct Ages, the Influence yield, updated Rivers, and the City/Town settlement system. Learn how these changes impact gameplay.
New Features:
- Distinct Ages: The game features three unique Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern, each with its own tech and civic trees. Civilizations are tied to one age, with leaders choosing a transformation for the next Age (e.g., Rome to Normans to French Empire). Civilization choices are influenced by leaders, previous civ, and gameplay elements (e.g., owning 3 Horse Resources unlocks Mongolia in the Exploration Age). An Age shift Crisis imposes temporary negative policies to balance gameplay.
- Influence Yield: A new yield type, Influence, is introduced for conducting diplomacy with other civilizations.
- Updated Rivers: Rivers are now categorized into small and navigable. Navigable rivers allow Naval Units and embarked Units to travel through them. Both types of rivers now run through tiles rather than along their edges.
- Cities and Towns: Settlements are now divided into Cities and Towns. All settlements, except the Capital, start as Towns, which convert Production to Gold and behave like Cities in terms of accruing yields and purchasing Buildings. Towns can be upgraded into Cities.
- Settlement Naming and Limits: City names appear in their native languages. Settlements are limited by Age.
- Settler Units: Settlers are divided into two units: the Founder (a Civilian Unit) and others.
