With your first city established and a basic production chain underway, the next critical phase is exploration. Your Scout unit, once produced, should be immediately dispatched to uncover the surrounding map. The fog of war conceals valuable information, and venturing out is essential for discovering new lands, resources, and potential threats or allies. Aim to explore in a systematic manner, moving your Scout in a pattern that covers as much ground as possible without leaving large unexplored gaps.

As you explore, keep an eye out for several key discoveries. Natural Wonders are rare and powerful locations that provide significant bonuses to nearby cities, often in the form of extra yields or unique abilities. Discovering and settling near a Natural Wonder can provide a substantial early-game advantage. You'll also be looking for Tribal Villages (or Barbarian Camps, depending on the game's context). Tribal Villages can offer valuable rewards, such as gold, era score, or even a free unit, while Barbarian Camps are hostile encampments that must be cleared to prevent them from spawning aggressive units that will harass your empire.

The primary goal of early exploration is to identify potential locations for your second and third cities. Look for areas with abundant resources, good defensive terrain, and proximity to fresh water. Understanding the geography of the map will inform your expansion strategy. You may also encounter other civilizations. The first contact with another leader is a significant diplomatic event. Be prepared to engage in dialogue, establish trade routes, or potentially prepare for conflict.

Don't neglect the strategic importance of scouting. Knowing where your neighbors are, what their military strength appears to be, and what resources are available in contested territories can inform your decisions about city placement, military production, and diplomatic overtures. A well-explored map is a well-understood map, and understanding is the first step towards mastery in Civilization VII.
