Once you've explored a reasonable radius around your capital and identified promising locations for new settlements, it's time to focus on early expansion and growth. The decision of when and where to found your second city is crucial. Aim to establish your second city within the first 20-30 turns, ideally in a location that complements your capital and secures valuable resources or strategic positioning.

When founding your second city, consider its purpose. Is it to secure a vital strategic resource like Iron? Is it to claim a fertile river valley for rapid food growth? Or is it to establish a forward operating base to defend against a potential aggressor? Each of these considerations will influence the optimal placement. Remember to prioritize settling near fresh water for the housing bonus, and to begin improving surrounding tiles with your Builder units as soon as possible.

As your cities grow, you'll need to manage your population effectively. Ensure your cities have enough housing to support their citizens. Unmet housing needs will halt population growth. Builders are essential for constructing farms, which increase food yields, and for building structures like Granaries, which further boost food storage and growth. Production is equally important. Prioritize building essential infrastructure like the Monument (for culture), the Barracks (for military unit experience), and the Library (for science) in your cities.

Don't neglect your military. Even in the early game, a small but well-positioned force of Spearmen or Archers can deter barbarian raids and provide a defensive buffer. If you encounter aggressive neighbors, you may need to prioritize military production over infrastructure. Balancing expansion with development and defense is the core challenge of the early game. Successfully establishing a few well-placed cities with growing populations and developing infrastructure will set you on a strong path for the mid and late game.
