Learn about Siam's leader Ramkhamhaeng and unique units in Civilization V. Details on Naresuan's Elephant and the Wat.
Siam's unique unit, Naresuan's Elephant, replaces the Knight. It does not require Horses as a strategic resource but is slower. It gains a 50% bonus against enemy mounted units, potentially negating the need for Pikemen.
The Wat, Siam's unique building, replaces the University. It removes the science bonus from working Jungle tiles and instead provides an additional 3 culture points per turn.
Ramkhamhaeng
Ramkhamhaeng inherited the kingdom of Sukhothai in 1278 and, through military and diplomatic skill, expanded its influence across much of Southeast Asia over twenty years. His parents were King Sri Indraditya and Queen Sueang. He served under his father at age 19 during the attack on Sukhothai, earning the title "Phra Ram Khamhaeng" or Rama the Bold for his actions. After his brother Ban Mueang's death in 1277, Ramkhamhaeng ascended to the throne. During his reign, he expanded Sukhothai's dominance west into Burma, east into Laos, and south down the Malay Peninsula. He promoted trade and diplomatic alliances, rather than seeking to dominate. Most historical knowledge of his rule comes from a stone inscription created in 1292, the earliest surviving example of the Thai language, which portrays him as a wise and benevolent leader. Ramkhamhaeng was a patron of Buddhism and supported the arts, particularly bronze sculpture and ceramics. He died in 1298, and his empire, held together by his charisma and diplomacy, did not long survive him. Sukhothai itself fell a century later. Ramkhamhaeng is regarded as a great leader and the first to rule over a united Siam. However, it is important to note that most information about him originates from his own inscription.
