Germany's post-World War I situation was dire, marked by bankruptcy and the threat of occupation. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party rose to power, rebuilding the nation and military rapidly while persecuting minorities. Hitler's expansionist policies led to the annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia, and with Soviet Russia's complicity, Poland was dismembered. France and England declared war, but Germany's swift invasion through the Low Countries in 1940 led to France's surrender and the British retreat from the continent.

In 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union, initially achieving significant success. However, the Soviet army, despite heavy casualties and prior purges, heroically halted the German advance before Leningrad and Moscow, buying time for a massive counter-offensive. Meanwhile, the United States entered the war after Pearl Harbor, and Allied forces began operations in Africa and Italy. The invasion of France opened another front, and Germany's exhausted army eventually collapsed. Hitler committed suicide, and Germany surrendered in May 1945.

Germany paid a heavy price, with millions of lives lost, including German Jews. The Soviet Union expanded westward, and Poland received German eastern territories. The Landsknecht is a cost-effective alternative to the Pikeman, offering two units for the price of one with similar attack values. The Panzer replaces the Tank, boasting 20% more strength and an additional movement point. Germany's unique power is particularly useful in the early game, allowing players to leverage barbarian encampments for rapid unit acquisition and city attacks. However, this ability becomes less significant in the later stages of the game.

Otto von Bismarck, the "Iron Chancellor," is highlighted as a pivotal figure in German history. He unified Germany, transforming it from a loose confederation into a dominant European power. Descended from Prussian nobility, Bismarck was a skilled diplomat and historian, though he also engaged in dueling and socialized extensively with aristocrats.
