Civilization Power: Barbary Corsairs

This is a cool one! When you destroy a Barbarian naval unit, there's a 50% chance you'll convert it to your side and snag 25 Gold. Keep an eye out for those barbarians at sea; they can be a nice little gold boost!

Unique Units

History of the Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Empire has a seriously long and impressive history, starting around the 13th century in Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). It grew to span three continents and lasted for about six centuries! It's a shame many people don't know much about it, because it was a huge and fascinating empire.

At its height, the Ottomans controlled territory from Hungary all the way down to the Indian Ocean and across to Morocco. The land they ruled was incredibly diverse – mountains, plains, deserts, you name it. Imagine the weather differences, from scorching heat in Egypt to freezing winters in Hungary!

The empire is named after Osman I, who was a prince in a small province bordering the Black Sea. As the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, which had ruled Anatolia, started to weaken, Osman took advantage of the situation to expand his influence towards the Byzantine Empire.

By the 14th century, the Byzantine Empire was really on its last legs. The Ottomans steadily chipped away at their territory, first in Anatolia and then moving into the Balkans. A famous event was the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, where a large European Crusader army tried to stop the Ottoman advance. It was a massive battle, though the exact numbers are debated by historians.

The Crusaders apparently had some issues with leadership and were a bit overconfident. Despite some early successes, the Ottoman forces, led by Sultan Bayezid I, used their tactics effectively. They had sharpened stakes to deter cavalry charges and used their infantry and reserves of Sipahi cavalry to counter the Crusader assaults. It was a complex battle, and the Ottomans ultimately managed to hold their ground and inflict heavy losses on the Crusaders.
