Discover the best methods for farming 1-Ups in Super Mario 3D Land, including the efficient World 1-2 trick and other strategies to maximize your spare lives.
Walkthrough
- 1Maximum Lives: The life counter goes from 'C99' to 'CC0' after 100 lives, and then to 'CC9' after another 99 lives. The absolute maximum is 'CCC', which equates to 1110 lives (999 + 1 + 99 + 1 + 9 + 1).
- 2Game Over: If you die with 0 spare lives, you get a 'Game Over'. You can continue from a 'Hint Room' which provides a tip and a Tanooki Leaf. You reappear at the start of the world you were in, retaining course completion progress. The Invincibility Leaf and P-Wing Help Blocks will still appear in the course where you hit 'Game Over'.
- 3Earning Lives:
- 4100 Coins: Collecting 100 coins in-game awards one life. The counter resets to zero after each life is earned.
- 51-Ups: Green Mushrooms (1-Ups) are found in secret areas, rewarding thoroughness or difficult feats.
- 6Goal Pole: Reaching the top of the Goal Pole at the end of a course grants a 1-Up. Using a coin box or propeller box grants a bonus 1-Up regardless of where you grab the pole.
- 7Consecutive Enemy Defeats:
- 8Defeating five enemies consecutively without touching the ground earns a 1-Up.
- 9Bouncing on a Koopa Shell five consecutive times without touching the ground also earns a 1-Up.
- 10Defeating five enemies consecutively while invincible (after a Super Star) earns a 1-Up, even if you touch the ground between defeats.
- 11Subsequent enemies defeated (or shell bounces) after the initial five earn an extra life each until you touch the ground or lose invincibility.
- 12If you grab another Super Star before the first runs out, your invincibility timer resets, and the 1-Up counter does not reset, allowing continuous 1-Up earning.
- 131-Up Farming: To keep earned lives, you must finish the course. Exiting via the pause menu will not save them.
- 14World 1-2 Method (Most Efficient):
- 15Past the Checkpoint Flag, find Koopa Troopas near ? Blocks.
- 16Stand on the first large ? Block, at its south edge.
- 17Wait for a Koopa Troopa to move south of the block.
- 18Tiptoe off the block onto the Koopa Troopa. It will withdraw into its shell.
- 19Let Mario bounce off the shell and drop back onto it, sending it south.
- 20The shell will bounce between the ? Block and the south wall. Mario will repeatedly bounce off the shell without moving until time runs out.
- 21Every bounce after the fourth earns a 1-Up. Approximately two 1-Ups are earned per second.
- 22If Mario misses the shell, reposition on the ? Block and try again.
- 23If Mario takes damage or falls, move out of the shell's path while invincible, hop back on the ? Block, and drop onto the shell.
- 24If you die or time runs out, you restart at the Checkpoint. You can retry the method.
- 25This method may need to be performed twice to earn a significant number of lives due to time constraints.
