Learn about Normal and Golden Mystery Boxes in Super Mario 3D Land, including locations and how to get Star Coins.

Mystery Boxes can be revisited daily, with randomized contents each time. Golden Boxes are a rarer variant that contain two Star Coins and sometimes 1-Ups, without requiring enemies to be defeated first. There are 20 unique Normal Mystery Boxes, each yielding one Star Coin, and 15 unique Golden Mystery Boxes, each yielding two Star Coins, for a total of 50 Star Coins obtainable from these boxes without using StreetPass. StreetPass can reset already collected Mystery Boxes, allowing for a theoretically infinite number of Star Coins, though there is a cap of 999.

Mystery Boxes are found in Worlds 1, 2, 4, and 6, as well as Special Worlds 1, 3, 5, and 7. Each box has a limited selection of possible contents.

Normal Mystery Box List:

1. Found In: World 1, World 6
   Description: Grab the Fire Flower and shoot the two fake Goombas with fireballs. A Star Coin will appear along with a large number of coins. Grab the Star Coin first.
2. Found In: World 1, Special World 1
   Description: Defeat the Goomba directly in front of you, then grab the Star Coin that appears. Grab the Tanooki Leaf in the north-east corner of the room and the scattered coins.
3. Found In: World 1, Special World 1
   Description: Stomp the three Goombas to your north. The Star Coin will appear. Grab it and the dropped coins.
4. Found In: World 1, Special World 1
   Description: Defeat the three Piranha Plants to your north. The Star Coin will appear. Grab it and the scattered coins.
5. Found In: World 1, Special World 3
   Description: Defeat the Biddybud circling the Fire Flower, grab the Star Coin that appears, collect the Fire Flower, and finally grab the scattered coins.
6. Found In: World 2
   Description: Defeat the two Venus Fire Traps to either side of the Fire Flower. The Star Coin will appear. Collect it, followed by the Fire Flower and scattered coins.
7. Found In: World 2, Special World 3
   Description: Defeat all five Biddybuds moving in a circle. Grab the Star Coin followed by the scattered coins.
8. Found In: World 2, Special World 3
   Description: Stomp the two stacked Goombas and the Venus Fire Trap to the right of the Goombas. A Star Coin will appear. Collect the Star Coin, the Fire Flower just north of it, and the scattered coins.
