Master Resident Evil with Orca782's speed guide for Jill Valentine. Learn optimal routes, item management, and strategies to achieve the fastest completion times and unlock bonuses.

This guide, written by Orca782, details a speedrun strategy for Resident Evil on Nintendo GameCube. It prioritizes speed and unlocking bonuses over story, and assumes the player is familiar with the game's plot. The guide is rife with spoilers, including puzzle solutions.

Playing as Jill: Jill's larger inventory (2 extra spaces) and her possession of the lockpick, which bypasses certain doors requiring keys for Chris, make her the preferred character for speedruns. Her game is also considered slightly faster due to Rebecca not slowing things down.

Key Speedrun Principles:

  • Skip CGs: All cinematic scenes (CGs) must be skipped to save time.
  • No Free Time: Avoid pausing, going to the bathroom, or accessing menus/maps during gameplay. Load data and run through the game, saving only when necessary.
  • Minimal Item Pickup: Do not pick up unnecessary ammo, guns, or typewriter ribbons. Focus on essential health items and a limited amount of handgun ammo (around 45 rounds) until the grenade launcher is acquired. After obtaining the grenade launcher, maintain a balance of 3 weapon/health slots, leaving 5 for puzzle items.
  • Grenade Launcher Glitch: Utilize the grenade launcher glitch for a significant advantage, making the game much easier and faster. Flame rounds are effective for killing and incinerating zombies, preventing them from returning as tougher red zombies.
  • Strategic Shooting: Shoot only when necessary. Use the handgun to incapacitate zombies for evasion.
  • Efficient Navigation: Stick strictly to the routes outlined in the guide. Avoid entering rooms not specified, as they are often unnecessary and contain non-essential items.
  • Route Familiarity: Before attempting a section, read ahead to know the exact path. Familiarizing yourself with the route, possibly by tracing it on a map, will prevent time loss from checking the in-game menu.
  • Rescues and Choices: To maintain speed, Chris will not be rescued from his cell. Rescuing Barry is optional; not rescuing him slightly simplifies the game by avoiding the second tyrant.
  • Difficulty: Play on Normal or Hard mode. Easy mode does not provide bonuses.

Walkthrough - Mansion (Part 1):

  1. Skip the opening CGs. Start in the Dining Room.
  2. Run towards Barry (do not touch the ink ribbon). A short CG will play; skip it.
  3. Go to the door near the fireplace.
  4. Enter the Elongated Hall. Turn left and run into the opening.
  5. Skip the CG and immediately run back the way you came (do not shoot).
  6. Return to the previous room (Dining Room). Skip the CG.
  7. Enter the Main Hall through the large double doors.
  8. In the Main Hall, skip the CG, run behind the stairs, go up them, around the small section at the top, and back down to the 1st floor.
  9. Skip the CG and put away the LOCKPICK.
  10. Return to the Dining Room.
  11. Run to the Elongated Hall, take the left, go to the zombie room, past the body, and to the door.
  12. Enter the Far Left Stairs. Pick up the HERBs and the CLIP.
