Alright, you've made it to the Castelia Sewers! It's a bit damp and dark down here, but don't worry, I'll guide you through. When you head down the stairs, Hugh will catch up to you. He'll ask if you want him to join you, and you should definitely say 'Yes' – he's super helpful right now, especially with the Gym battle coming up.

Hugh's party changes depending on which starter you picked, but he'll always have a Pidove too. Here's what he's packing:

• If Snivy was your starter: Pignite (Level 20, Fire/Fighting, holding Charcoal) and Pidove (Level 18, Normal/Flying).
• If Tepig was your starter: Dewott (Level 20, Water, holding Mystic Water) and Pidove (Level 18, Normal/Flying).
• If Oshawott was your starter: Servine (Level 20, Grass, holding Miracle Seed) and Pidove (Level 18, Normal/Flying).

This is a fantastic spot for training! While Hugh is with you, all your Pokémon (and his!) get fully healed automatically after every single battle. Seriously, even if they faint, they'll be back to full HP for the next fight. This means you can battle to your heart's content without needing to trek back to a Pokémon Center. Take full advantage of this!

Just a heads-up, most trainer battles in the sewers will be single battles, and Hugh won't jump in. However, the wild Pokémon encounters are a bit different. You'll be in double battles pretty much constantly, just like in tall grass, but with Hugh fighting alongside you. It's a great way to level up your team before you face the Gym Leader.
