Learn how to defeat the Feral Retriever, a challenging Hunt Mark in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. Get tips on strategy, weaknesses, and rewards.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
First things first, head to Mt. Bur-Omisace and find Hymms, the monk standing southwest of the Gate Crystal. He'll give you the rundown for this hunt.
  2. 2
After accepting the hunt, you'll need to make your way to the Paramina Rift, specifically the Spine of the Icewyrm zone. To get there, leave Mt. Bur-Omisace and travel south through the Freezing Gorge.
  3. 3
From Freezing Gorge, continue into the Frozen Brook area and take the exit heading southwest. This will lead you to the Path of the Firstfall.
  4. 4
You'll find a Save Crystal in the Path of the Firstfall, so take a moment to save your game. Once you're ready, head west into the Spine of the Icewyrm zone. The Feral Retriever will be lurking in the northern part of this area.
Tips
  • The Feral Retriever's main threat comes from its status-inflicting attacks. Having a White Mage in your party is highly recommended to counter these effects with Esuna.
  • Be ready to use Dispel early on to remove any buffs the Mark might have.
  • The Feral Retriever can inflict Sap with its regular attacks, Petrify with its Stone Gaze technick, and a nasty combination of Blind, Silence, Sleep, and Slow with its Blaster technick.
  • It can also use Purify to remove status effects from itself, so don't rely too heavily on inflicting status ailments on it.
  • Watch out for its Balance attack, which it may use when its HP is low. This attack can one-hit-kill a target if the Mark has taken over 10,000 damage.
  • The Feral Retriever is weak to Earth elemental attacks. It also absorbs Wind and takes half damage from most other elements. Your best bet is to use two melee characters to keep its attention while your White Mage supports from the back.
  • If you have Larsa in your party, he can assist with buffs like Bubble and healing with Cura.
  • Once you've defeated the Feral Retriever, return to Hymms in Mt. Bur-Omisace to claim your reward.
