Learn how to effectively use Gambits for AI control, understand enemy chaining for better loot, and discover how weather impacts combat in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.
Gambits are commands that allow the AI to perform actions automatically in battle. They consist of a target (enemy, self, or ally), a condition (like low HP or specific enemy status), and an action (like casting Cure or attacking). You gain access to Gambits later in the game. Actions become available as you progress, while targets and conditions can be purchased on the License Board. Each character has a limited number of Gambit slots, starting with four and expandable up to twelve. The order of Gambits is crucial, as they are processed by priority from top to bottom. A higher-placed Gambit will be executed before a lower one if its conditions are met. It's recommended to place essential Gambits like resurrection (Phoenix Down) and healing (Cure/Potion) at the top, followed by status ailment cures, and finally, attack Gambits at the bottom. As you advance, enemy buffs, your own buffs, and complex status ailments will require more intricate Gambit setups. Boss battles may necessitate frequent adjustments to your Gambits due to their evolving attack patterns.
Chaining enemies involves defeating multiple foes of the same type consecutively. A counter appears on screen, and as it increases, the quality of loot drops improves. Enemies have four tiers of loot: common (40% base), uncommon (25% base), rare (5% base), and very rare (1% base). These percentages increase with your Chain Level. The Chain Level increases when you pick up loot bags; without picking up loot, it typically increases every 6-10 kills, guaranteed every ten. Reaching the maximum Chain Level (Level 3) requires approximately 18-30 kills. The Chain Level increases drop percentages as follows: Level 1 (45% common, 30% uncommon, 8% rare, 3% very rare), Level 2 (50% common, 35% uncommon, 12% rare, 5% very rare), and Level 3 (55% common, 40% uncommon, 18% rare, 7% very rare). Your Chain Level is lost if you defeat a different type of enemy, touch a Save Crystal, or enter areas where you only control Vaan (like towns). Using the Strahl later in the game does not break chains.
Weather significantly impacts gameplay, both in and out of battle. Outside of combat, it can influence the spawn of certain enemies, like Entites. In Giza Plains, weather is less random, but elsewhere, it's largely unpredictable, though entering and exiting zones can sometimes trigger specific conditions. During combat, weather affects the efficacy of certain magicks and weapons. For instance, Thunder magick is more powerful during rain. Bows and crossbows experience reduced accuracy in windy weather, heavy rains, blizzards, and sandstorms.
