Your In-Game Command Center

The Heads-Up Display, or HUD, is your primary source of vital information during gameplay in Cuphead. It's strategically placed to provide critical data without obstructing the view of the action. Mastering the HUD means understanding what each icon and meter represents and how it influences your decisions during intense boss fights and Run 'n' Gun stages.

Key HUD Elements

Health (Hearts)

Located in the top-left corner of the screen, you'll see your current health represented by heart icons. You start with three hearts. Each time you take damage, one heart is lost. Losing all hearts results in a Game Over, forcing you to restart the current section. The number of hearts you have directly dictates your survivability. Some charms, like the Heart Charm, can increase your maximum health to five, but at the cost of reduced damage output.

Super Meter (Cards)

Adjacent to your health hearts, you'll find the Super Meter, depicted as a series of cards. This meter fills up as you deal damage to enemies and, more importantly, by parrying pink-colored projectiles. The meter is divided into five cards. Each card can be used to perform an EX attack, which is an enhanced version of your weapon's primary fire. Spending all five cards allows you to unleash a powerful Super Art. Knowing when to spend cards on EX attacks versus saving them for a Super Art is a key strategic decision.

Coins

Coins are the in-game currency used to purchase weapons, charms, and consumables from Porkrind's Emporium and Chef Saltbaker's Bakery. The number of coins you have collected is typically displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen, often represented by a coin icon and a numerical value. Collecting all coins in Run 'n' Gun stages is essential for 100% completion and unlocking certain items.

Weapon Icons

While not always a persistent element of the HUD, the currently equipped weapon is usually indicated by an icon, often near the Super Meter or coin count. If you have multiple weapons equipped (which you can switch between using the weapon switch button), the HUD will show which weapon is currently active. This is crucial for quickly identifying which weapon you are firing and for making rapid tactical decisions about switching.

Score and Time (Run 'n' Gun Stages)

In Run 'n' Gun stages, the HUD will also display your current score and the time elapsed for the stage. These elements are primarily for tracking your performance and achieving higher ranks. While not critical for survival, they are important for players aiming for high scores or speedrun attempts.

Boss Health Bar

During boss encounters, a large health bar for the boss will appear at the top of the screen. This bar visually represents the boss's remaining health. As you deal damage, the bar depletes. This is your primary indicator of how close you are to completing the current phase or defeating the boss entirely. Some bosses have multiple health bars, indicating different phases.
