Master the Barthandelus boss fight in Final Fantasy XIII with our detailed walkthrough, covering stats, weaknesses, phases, and effective strategies to overcome this challenging encounter.
Walkthrough
- 1Immediately use Librascope to identify all five targets.
- 2Prioritize destroying the four side heads. Each head absorbs one element and is weak to the opposing element. They also halve damage from all other elements.
- 3For each head: attack once with COM/COM/RAV, then switch to RAV/RAV/RAV until the head is broken and destroyed.
- 4Be aware that as you destroy heads, Barthandelus will use Magic Amplification to upgrade elemental spells. He will also buff the heads with Protect, Shell, Haste, and Faith using Enchanted Veil and Mystic Aura.
- 5Once all four side heads are destroyed, the Chain Gauge and Stagger threshold will be lowered, and status affinities will change.
- 6Switch to COM/COM/SAB or RAV/RAV/SAB and attack until Deshell or Imperil stick on the main boss.
- 7Switch back to COM/COM/RAV or RAV/RAV/RAV to deal damage.
- 8If healing is needed and Potions aren't enough, temporarily switch to MED/RAV/MED.
- 9Watch out for Barthandelus's attacks: Thanatosian Smile (a straight beam attack) and Destrudo (a powerful ultimate move that charges for 30 seconds).
- 10During Destrudo's charge, attack at all costs to reduce the number of projectiles he launches. Dealing 12,000 damage will cause him to flinch, reducing projectiles from 20 to 12. Dealing an additional 8,000 damage will further reduce projectiles to 6.
- 11Monitor your HP and use Potions if it drops below 50% max HP.
Tips
- The effects of Aegisol and Fortisol last for five minutes; work quickly.
- Avoid setting your ATB to slow for this battle, as it will hinder your ability to react and maintain buffs.
- Healing with Potions is recommended, but be prepared to switch paradigms if necessary.
- Pay attention to the visual and audio cues for Barthandelus's special attacks.
- Aegisol (possible drop)
- Instrument of Truth (achievement)
