Learn how to effectively use and switch between Combat Paradigms in Final Fantasy XIII. Master roles like Commando, Ravager, Medic, and more to dominate battles.

Alright, so in Final Fantasy XIII, your characters have these special battle roles called Paradigms. Think of them as their combat specialties. You'll unlock these a little ways into the story, and each character can have up to three Paradigms assigned to them, based on what they're good at. It's super important to get a handle on these because they're key to winning fights!

Here's a quick rundown of who gets what roles:

  • Lightning can be a Commando, Ravager, and later a Medic.
  • Sazh starts with Ravager and Synergist, and gets Commando later on.
  • Vanille is a Ravager, Saboteur, and Medic.
  • Snow is your go-to Commando, Ravager, and Sentinel.
  • Hope focuses on Ravager, Synergist, and Medic.
  • Fang is a Commando, Sentinel, and Saboteur.

Once you've got Paradigms unlocked, you'll notice some cool new stuff on your battle screen. In the bottom left, you'll see two new additions:

  1. Paradigm Shift: This is accessed by pressing L1/LB. It's your ace in the hole during battle! It lets you instantly change your characters' roles by picking from pre-set setups. You can even create up to six different setups, so you can really customize your approach to different fights.
  2. Techniques Command: This is a new command that uses up Technical Points (TP). These points aren't infinite, so use your special moves wisely!

Over in the bottom right corner of the screen, there's more useful info:

  1. You'll see a short code next to your character's name and HP display showing their current role – like 'COM' for Commando, 'RAV' for Ravager, and so on.
  2. Below the leader's HP bar, you'll see the Technical Points gauge. It goes down when you use TP, and it can hold a maximum of 5 points. This gauge slowly refills during battles, but you can also instantly refill it completely by using an Elixir or Ether Smoke. Mastering when to switch Paradigms and when to use your TP will make a huge difference in how you tackle enemies!
