Learn how to encounter and catch the legendary Fire/Steel-type Pokemon Heatran in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's Stark Mountain. Includes strategies and tips.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
First, visit the endpoint of Stark Mountain and speak to Buck. He will mention finding the Magma Stone and return home.
  2. 2
Leave Stark Mountain and fly to the Survival Area.
  3. 3
Enter the house to the left of the Pokémon Center.
  4. 4
Speak to the old man and then to Buck. Buck will then leave to return the Magma Stone.
  5. 5
The next time you visit the endpoint of Stark Mountain, Heatran will be there, ready to be battled and caught.

How to Quickly Reach the Endpoint:

  1. From the main cavern of Stark Mountain, head north towards the wide horizontal path.
  2. Travel east, past the stairs leading north and south.
  3. Go north along the narrow path east from the Bird Keeper and Black Belt.
  4. Rock Smash the cracked rock ahead and continue north.
  5. Near the end, go down the stairs on the left.
  6. Proceed north towards the Ace Trainers.
  7. Squeeze past them and Rock Climb north. The cave leading to the endpoint will be on the left.

Heatran Information:

  • Level: 70
  • Type: Fire/Steel
  • Abilities: Flash Fire (Fire moves used against it heal it instead of dealing damage).
  • Attacks: Heat Wave, Stone Edge, Earth Power, Metal Sound.
  • Weaknesses: Ground (x4), Fighting, Fire.
  • Resistances: Normal, Flying, Rock, Bug, Steel, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Fairy.
  • Immunities: Poison.

Strategy:

  • Recommended Types: Water/Ground types are preferable to resist Heat Wave and Stone Edge. Examples include Gastrodon, Whiscash, and Quagsire. Quagsire can learn Yawn to induce Sleep. Gastrodon can learn Yawn as an Egg Move.
  • Weakening Heatran: Avoid Ground moves as they deal quadruple damage. Use Soak to change Heatran to a Water-type before using False Swipe, as False Swipe does reduced damage to Steel-types. Pokémon like Seaking, Octillery, Pelipper, and Lumineon can learn Soak.
  • Catching Heatran: Bring Heatran's HP down to 1 (or very low) and apply a status condition (Sleep or Paralysis are ideal). Use Ultra Balls, Timer Balls (for longer fights), or Dusk Balls (since you are in a cave).
