Alright, let's tackle the 'In Her Mother's Footsteps' side quest in Horizon Zero Dawn. This one's a bit of a trek, but totally doable. You'll be helping a worried father, Thok, find his daughter, Arana, who's gone off hunting a Scrapper. Don't worry, we'll get her back safe and sound!

Walkthrough

First things first, head towards the middle of the starting area. You should see a Strider site marked on your map. From there, travel northwest. Look for a campfire just east of a bridge, and just northeast of that, you'll find Thok laying on the ground, calling for help. He'll tell you Arana went after a Scrapper and he needs you to find her.

Arana is located south of where you found Thok, hiding in a tree. The bad news? She's surrounded by four Watchers! Take them out however you see fit. If you want a little extra experience, try using stealth to get the drop on them. Once they're dealt with, chat with Arana.

Now, the quest isn't quite over. Arana needs you to retrieve the spear from the Scrapper she was hunting. The good news is, more enemies mean more loot and experience! After Arana heads off, activate your Focus (press R3) and scan the area. Look for purple triangles or mist on the ground – these mark the Scrapper's trail.

Press R1 when you find the trail to highlight it so you can follow it even without your Focus active. Follow this trail until it goes cold, then activate your Focus again to find and highlight the next segment of the trail. Keep doing this until you reach the Scrapper.

You'll eventually end up in the southeast corner of the area. You'll spot the Scrapper you're looking for on top of a cliff, walking away from you. Be super careful as you approach this spot, because there are two Watchers patrolling the area, and two other Scrappers nearby. Thankfully, the other Scrappers should be busy with their own business.

Use the tall grass in the area to your advantage. Take out the two Watchers stealthily first. Once they're down, you should be able to sneak up behind the target Scrapper. Perform a Silent Strike to take it down quickly.

Once the Scrapper is defeated, loot the spear from it. Then, all that's left is to return the spear to Thok to complete the quest.

Tips

Using the tall grass is your best friend for dealing with the Watchers, both when you first find Arana and when you're hunting the Scrapper.
Don't forget to use your Focus (R3) to track the Scrapper's trail. It can be easy to lose otherwise!
