Fatal Inheritance

Follow our step-by-step guide to complete the Fatal Inheritance side quest in Horizon Zero Dawn, including defeating machines and uncovering Ranaman's secrets.

Alright, so you’ve picked up the 'Fatal Inheritance' side quest. Ranaman, a noble’s son, needs your help because his family’s estate got swarmed by machines. He claims a Ravager and some Watchers attacked, and now he wants you to clear them out. The estate is just south and a bit east of Meridian Village. Head out of the village on the southern road, and when you hit that fork, just keep heading south. You'll find The Estate soon enough.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll see a Ravager chilling out front, with a couple of Watchers patrolling nearby. Your best bet here is to use the tall grass to sneak up on those Watchers and take them out quickly. Once they’re dealt with, focus your attention on the Ravager.

Pro-Tip: Aim for the cannon on its shoulder first! Seriously, blast that thing off. It makes the Ravager way less of a threat, honestly, almost like fighting a Sawtooth.

After you’ve dismantled all the machines, you’ll need to head into the workshop, but surprise! The doors are locked. Don't sweat it, though. There are some handy footholds around the back that will let you climb up to the second floor. Once you're up there, drop down inside and find the source of that beeping – it’s an unknown device. Inspect it, then find the exit door. Head back towards the main estate building, and you’ll hear some screaming from inside.

Before you go rushing in, take a moment to loot the place! You know the drill – loot first, ask questions later. Once you’ve grabbed everything, check the cupboard on the ground floor. You’ll find Ranaman’s sister, Daradi, inside.

As you talk with Daradi outside, you’ll start to realize Ranaman isn’t exactly the innocent victim he made himself out to be. He shows up and tries to call in more machines to finish you off, but guess what? It backfires spectacularly. Instead of his goons, three Glinthawks show up. Yep, you’ve got to deal with them now.

Strategy for Glinthawks: If you remembered to destroy that Ravager’s cannon earlier, you can actually use it to help take down the Glinthawks. If not, fire arrows are your best friend here. Use them to bring the Glinthawks down to the ground, where you can really lay into them.

Once all the Glinthawks are down, have a final chat with Daradi at the house. She’ll reward you for sorting out this whole mess and finishing the quest.
