Explore The Hero's spells, sword, greatsword, and Luminary skills in Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition. Learn about their strengths and weaknesses.
The Hero learns a variety of spells as he levels up. While his offensive spells are effective in the early game for dealing with groups, his Magical Might stat is generally lower than other magic-users like Veronica or Rab, making his spells less powerful later on.

The Hero can wield swords, which are one-handed and can be used with a shield. Once Dual Wielding is learned, two swords can be used simultaneously. Early on, Flame Slash is the most useful skill, while Metal Slash is effective against Metal Slimes and Dragon Slash against dragon-type enemies. Using a shield offers a defensive advantage. Flame Slash is recommended for use with Erik's Itemized Kill Pep Power.

Greatswords are two-handed weapons that deal more damage than normal swords, but do not allow the use of a shield. Early greatsword skills focus on damage, with Helichopter hitting groups and Cutting Edge targeting single foes, making them effective for both random and boss battles. Unbridled Blade can later replace Cutting Edge.

The Swordmastery skill tree, located at the top of the Character Builder, requires progression through Swords or Greatswords. The right side, from Greatswords, grants access to Strength +25. Many Swordmastery skills are MP-intensive. Sword Dance is particularly useful against bosses. Gigacrash and Gigasmash hit a single group of enemies with lightning damage, while Gigaslash and Gigagash hit all enemies. Blade of Ultimate Power is a powerful non-elemental attack but costs 48 MP.
