Master the Shadow Jasper boss fight in Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Learn strategies for all three phases and claim your reward.

Alright, so you've made it to Act III and are ready to tackle some of the tougher post-game challenges. This next one is a one-on-one duel for Hendrik against an old foe: Shadow Jasper. Depending on how you've geared up Hendrik, this could be a breeze or a real test, so let's get you prepped!

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Boss: Shadow Jasper
  • Party Member: Hendrik (solo fight)
  • Key Defense: Dark resistance is crucial.

Phases:

  1. Phase 1: Human Jasper
Jasper starts in his human form, wielding twin swords. He'll use standard dual-sword attacks that hit twice, and a powerful dark sword slam. Hendrik's natural defense is usually high enough to mitigate a lot of this, but if you're struggling, remember Hendrik has access to Moreheal.
  2. Phase 2: Jasper Unbound
Once you've chipped away enough of his HP, Jasper transforms into his winged form, Jasper Unbound. He might waste a turn just 'guffawing graciously,' which is a nice little break. His attacks include a normal combo, a lance of darkness (which does no damage if you have dark protection), a dark-breath attack, and a flurry of slashes. Warning: Jasper can use Disruptive Wave to remove your buffs here, so be cautious about reapplying them unless absolutely necessary for survival.
  3. Phase 3: Deteriorating Jasper
This is the easiest phase. Jasper starts to break down, and the darkness consuming him actually begins to damage him. Most of his attacks will miss or do very little. Just keep hammering away, and you'll finish him off.

Strategy:

  • Gear Up: Before the fight, make sure Hendrik is equipped with items that boost his dark resistance. This will significantly reduce the damage from his dark-based attacks, making the whole encounter much smoother.
  • Hendrik's Skills: Focus on Hendrik's best single-target damage abilities. If he's built for axes, Parallax is your go-to. For greatswords, Unbridled Blade is excellent. If he's using a sword, Gyrfalcon Slash is the move to use.
  • Healing: Don't hesitate to use Moreheal if Hendrik's HP drops too low. It's better to play it safe than to get caught out.
  • Buffs: In Phase 2, be mindful of Jasper's Disruptive Wave. Unless your buffs are essential for surviving his immediate attacks, it might be better to hold off on reapplying them to avoid having them immediately dispelled.

Upon defeating Shadow Jasper, you'll witness a scene that concludes this part of the story. Your reward is the Twin Eagle Armour. While it might not be the absolute best armor in terms of stats, it's a crucial costume for Hendrik if you're aiming for the platinum trophy or all achievements in the Definitive Edition.
