Mysteriously Sealed Chests

Find and open all the Mysteriously Sealed Chests in Chrono Trigger! Learn the locations and contents of each chest, plus a special trick for upgraded items.

Alright, so you've probably noticed these black, sealed chests scattered around the world in Chrono Trigger. They look pretty mysterious, right? Don't worry, you'll get the chance to open them up later in the game. Once you've powered up your pendant in Zeal Palace, these chests become accessible, and they're packed with some really good gear!

Here's the deal: some of these chests appear in the same spot in different time periods. The trick to getting the best loot is to visit the 600 A.D. version of the location first, check out the chest, but don't take anything yet. Then, hop over to the 1000 A.D. version of the same spot. Grab the upgraded items there. Finally, zip back to 600 A.D. and snag the original items. It's like a little time-traveling treasure hunt!

A couple of important notes:

• For the chests in the Truce Inn, Mayor's Manor, Elder's House, Guardia Castle, Hero's Grave, and Northern Ruins areas that appear in multiple time periods, you'll want to use the trick mentioned above (visit 600 A.D. first, then 1000 A.D., then back to 600 A.D.).
• There's a special condition for the Guardia Castle chest in 1000 A.D.: you must have Marle in your party to access it.
• The chests in Guardia Forest are independent. You can open them in either time period without affecting the other.

Now, let's get to where these chests are and what goodies you can expect:

• Heckran Cave (1000 A.D.): Barrier Ring, Speed Ring
• Guardia Forest (1000 A.D.): Power Ring
• Guardia Forest (600 A.D.): Speed Capsule
• Forest Ruins (1000 A.D.): You'll find either a Swallow or a Guardian Helm here. You can only pick one, so choose wisely!
• Magic Cave (600 A.D.): Magic Ring
• Truce Inn (1000 A.D.): Blue Plate
• Truce Inn (600 A.D.): Blue Vest
• Mayor's Manor (Porre; 1000 A.D.): Black Plate, White Plate
• Elder's House (Porre; 600 A.D.): Black Vest, White Vest
• Guardia Castle (1000 A.D.): Red Plate
• Guardia Castle (600 A.D.): Red Vest
• Hero's Grave (1000 A.D.): Moonbeam Armor
• Northern Ruins (600 A.D.): Nova Armor

There are also some weapon chests that work a bit differently:

• Hero's Grave (1000 A.D.): Suzaku
• Northern Ruins (600 A.D.): Onimaru
• Hero's Grave (1000 A.D.): Valkyrie Bow
• Northern Ruins (600 A.D.): Siren's Kiss
