Navigate the Planar Prison in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Learn how to free slaves and defeat the Warden, but beware of potential bugs.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Buff up before following Haer'Dalis's troupe through the portal. You will encounter a bounty hunter named Aawill forcing a prisoner into a Thrall Collar.
  2. 2
Upon noticing you, they will seal the portal and attack. Concentrate on the Yuan-ti on the left first, as they are the most dangerous. A hidden Thief will also attempt to backstab your party.
  3. 3
After defeating them, the slave Tagget will explain the prison's mechanics: prisoners wear magical collars, and floor portals lead to cells. He advises against a direct route to the Warden, which leads through barracks filled with soldiers. He suggests finding the Master of Thralls and destroying his device that controls the Thrall Collars.
  4. 4
Loot the bounty hunters for the Pixie Prick +3 dagger, a Two Handed Sword +1, a suit of Melodic Chain +3, two suits of Leather Armor +1, a Small Shield +1, Bracers of Defense AC 8, Boots of Speed, a Cloak of the Shield, a Wand of the Heavens, Potions of Extra Healing, and some 6th-level scrolls. If imported from Siege of Dragonspear, you will also find the Bard Hat.
  5. 5
Head east from your starting point and fight three thralls. Take a Medium Shield +1 from one of them, but do not equip their collars. Note the central structure, which will be used to destroy the device controlling the thrall collars.
  6. 6
Continue east to a portal. You can avoid it by carefully maneuvering your characters, but enemies (Minotaurs and Umber Hulks or Yuan-ti) on the other side may harass you. If any party members fall through, you will fight five Githyanki; use Chaotic Commands if fighting them due to their psionic attack that can cause knock-out.
  7. 7
Continue north and fight more thralls and a Wyvern. Loot their bodies for the Kundane +2 short sword, Gauntlets of Weapon Skill, a Ring of Protection +1, Bracers of Defense AC 8, and a Wand of Lightning.
  8. 8
Follow the path west to find the Master of Thralls and two Air Elementals. Defeat them. A freed slave will inform you that you can destroy the Mastery Orb he was carrying in the furnace to the south.
  9. 9
Pick up the Mastery Orb and Staff of Air +2 from the Master of Thralls' remains.
  10. 10
Further west are two portals. The first leads to a cell with four Wolfweres and a Greater Wolfwere. The second pits you against two Efreeti and a Noble Efreeti; use Protection From Fire against the latter.
  11. 11
Position most of your party between the two floor portals. Send one character with the Mastery Orb to the room in the south. Destroy the orb in the furnace to free the thralls, earning 24750XP. The freed thralls will distract the Warden.
  12. 12
You will need to fight the Warden and his Thrall Slaves. If you are at a high level, the Warden will be accompanied by Yuan-ti.
  13. 13
Search the Warden's remains for gold, two Emeralds, three Star Sapphires, Adjatha the Drinker +2, the Wave Shaft, and the Planar Prison Key.
  14. 14
Go west from the Warden's location. Use the Planar Prison Key to bypass floor traps. You should meet Raelis Shai.
  15. 15
Each party member will earn 44000XP. Raelis Shai and her troupe will leave, and Haer'Dalis will stay with you, returning to the Five Flagons Inn. You may choose to recruit Haer'Dalis permanently. If your PC is a Bard, you will be offered the playhouse in the Five Flagons basement as your stronghold.

Warning: If Raelis Shai does not appear when expected, the quest may be bugged. Reloading an earlier save (e.g., from Chapter 3) may resolve this. On PC, the console can be used to bypass this issue. If this occurs, there may be no way to work around it on other platforms.

Tips
  • The direct route north through the barracks is dangerous, containing two Prison Captains and four Minotaurs in the first room, and three Prison Captains, a Stone Golem, and a Clay Golem in the second.
  • Do not put on one of the thralls' collars.
  • Chaotic Commands is advisable if fighting the Githyanki due to their psionic attack.
  • Protection From Fire is helpful against the Efreeti.
  • The freed thralls will serve as a distraction against the Warden.
