Navigate Abazigal's Lair in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Includes strategy for Draconis, traps, elemental enemies, and obtaining key items like Draconis's Head.
Walkthrough
- 1Exterior: Buff heavily and summon aid. Walk forward to confront Draconis. Avoid melee combat; he opens with a Spell Trigger including Horrid Wilting. Breach him and attack from a distance. Use True Seeing to dispel his illusions. Upon reducing Draconis to 0 HP, he transforms into a Green Dragon. If you attacked Draconis in melee in his human form, your characters may be stuck within his targeting circle. He will use a sequencer with Remove Magic; if successful, reapply Protection From Acid due to his formidable breath attack. Engage in standard dragon combat tactics.
- 2Level 1: Remain stationary to avoid a lightning trap. Allow enemies (Greater Werewyvern, Lesser Elementals) to approach. Have your Thief detect and remove the trap. Kill enemies without moving. Loot the Werewyvern's remains for an Empty Breath Potion Flask and a Scroll of Stone to Flesh. Note: The Scroll of Stone to Flesh is required later. Several more Lesser Earth Elementals are present. Three locked exits exist (west, east, northeast), with a trap before the northeast exit. Four rock pools lead to other lair sections; only the northwest pool is currently usable, leading to Level 2.
- 3Level 2: Upon arrival, you will be attacked by Ice Salamanders with a Fireshield (Blue) effect. Ensure Cold Protection for melee combat. After defeating them, proceed through the south door to a room with Bone Golems. After their defeat, remove the trap from the cabinet and loot it for magical ammunition. A locked chest contains mundane ammunition. Another Scroll of Stone to Flesh is on a table. Interact with the west pool to fill the empty bottle and acquire the Breath Potion. Use the pool in the cave to return to Level 1. The eastern pool leads to Level 3.
- 4Level 3: The west room contains Kuo-toa (Warriors, Archers, Priests) and two Greater Water Elementals. The north room has a Kuo-toa Captain and two more Elementals. The westernmost room is the lair of Olhydra, a powerful water elemental prince, accompanied by two Greater Water Elementals. Olhydra has a Fireshield (Blue); ensure Cold Protection before engaging. Besides 47000XP, there is no loot here. Continue east from the central room to find and kill two more Kuo-toa. Pick the lock on the cell door to find a tortured monk of Balthazar. He reveals that Abazigal's inner sanctum is guarded by a dragon under a geas, requiring a Scroll of Reversal to break. He lost his scroll. Loot Hindo's Hand from his remains (required to upgrade Hindo's Doom). The south room contains a door back to Level 2. Use the central pool to reach Level 4.
- 5Level 4: Upon entry, you will be attacked by a Seeker. Other eyeball enemies include Sentinels and Eagle Eyes; they are dangerous in groups. Use the Cloak of Mirroring to engage them. Vigilants are non-hostile but yield good XP. Proceed west, then north, then northwest. Note the petrified adventurers. Continue to Iycanth the Mad, one of Abazigal's servants. Ask about a Scroll of Removal (do not threaten him). He mentions a Gauth with lovely eyes accessible via a pool and offers the scroll if you bring him a gauth eyestalk. He suggests subcontracting the task to the petrified adventurers. Use a Scroll of Stone to Flesh on them; do not attack them. Assign them the quest of retrieving the eyestalk from the beholder and its cohorts, offering them 100G. After several days, they will return and attempt to attack you. After Bondari has reloaded, he will give you the eyestalk and Bronze Pantalettes. Going through the same tunnel the adventurers used leads to three Elder Orbs, a difficult battle. Proceed through the door to Iyca...
