Explore Clerics in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. Learn about class features, spell progression, and kits like Talos, Helm, Lathander, Tyr, and Tempus.
Class Features:
- May wear helmets.
- May wear any armor.
- Proficient in flails, morning stars, maces, clubs, quarterstaffs, and slings.
- May take a single proficiency point in any fighting style.
- May cast divine spells.
- May turn undead.
- 8 HP per level for the first nine levels, then 2 HP per level thereafter.
- Dual-class attribute: Wisdom.
Turn Undead: This ability causes undead enemies to flee. While effective at higher levels, it can lead to chasing them into traps and more enemies. Multiclassed Clerics may not have a high enough Cleric level to destroy undead outright, but dual-classing can allow for instant destruction.
Evil-Aligned Clerics: These Clerics control undead rather than destroying them, which may not align with the goal of destruction.
Multi- and Dual-Class Combinations: These combinations must adhere to weapon restrictions.
Cleric Spell Progression:

Priest of Talos
Talos is an evil thunder god.
- May cast Lightning Bolt once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every five levels.
- May cast Storm Shield (100% elemental resistance for 1 round per caster level) once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every ten levels.
- Alignment restricted to Evil (any) and Chaotic Neutral.
The Priest of Talos is not a very good kit. Storm Shield is an okay ability, but Lightning Bolt is considered horrible.
Priest of Helm
Helm is a stern and unforgiving god of guardianship.
- May cast True Sight once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every five levels.
- May cast Seeking Sword (+4 THAC0, +4 enchantment, 2-8 damage, 3 attacks per round for 1 round per 3 caster levels) once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every ten levels.
- Alignment restricted to Lawful (any) and True Neutral.
True Sight is a useful high-level spell, albeit situational. Seeking Sword is okay; 3 attacks per round is nice, but it suppresses casting abilities, which can be problematic if you need to cast spells like Heal. Playing a Fighter/Cleric or a Paladin might be a better choice.
Priest of Lathander
Lathander is a god of renewal.
- May cast Hold Undead once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every five levels.
- May cast Boon of Lathander (+1 THAC0, +1 damage, +1 saves, +1 attack per round for 1 round per level) once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every ten levels.
- Alignment restricted to Good (any) and True Neutral.
This is considered the best of the Cleric kits because Boon of Lathander is the best special ability. However, a Fighter/Cleric or Paladin is still considered plain better.
Priest of Tyr
Tyr is a god of justice.
- May cast Exaltation once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every five levels.
- May cast Divine Favor (+1 THAC0 and damage per three caster levels for 2 rounds) once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every ten levels.
- Alignment restricted to Lawful Good, Neutral Good, and Lawful Neutral.
Buffs that only last two rounds are not ideal, making this not a good Cleric kit.
Priest of Tempus
Tempus is a god of war.
- May cast Holy Power once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every five levels.
- May cast Chaos of Battle (random boosts to allies and penalties to enemies for 1 turn) once per day at level 1, and an additional time per day every ten levels.
- Alignment restricted to Chaotic (any) and True Neutral.
The special abilities lean towards creating a Cleric/Fighter hybrid. This is considered one of the better Cleric kits.
