What to Modify?

Alright, so you've been playing Risk of Rain Returns and you're probably wondering what you can actually *do* to make your tanks better, right? The game's not super tough, so you *could* just breeze through without touching anything. But honestly, where's the fun in that? Modifying your tank is a huge part of the experience, so let's dive into what's actually worth your hard-earned cash and effort.

Engines: The Real MVPs

Hands down, engines are the most impactful thing you can modify. When you increase an engine's 'load,' it means your tank can carry more weight. My personal strategy is to max out the load on the best engines I can find as soon as possible. This gives you a massive advantage early on. However, if you're feeling patient, you could hold off until the very end of the game. The V48 Engine is the absolute best in the game. You can actually find one south of the south ferry, but you won't be able to buy any until after you push through the burned-out forest and return to Leorad. That's when a new trader camp opens up selling them.

C-Units: Meh

I tinkered with modifying the C-Units for a bit, boosting their Hit and Evade stats. But honestly? I couldn't really tell if it made much of a difference, so I stopped bothering with it. Might be worth a shot if you have tons of cash, but don't expect miracles.

Shells: Cheap and Cheerful

You can increase the number of shells your favorite tanks can carry. This is done at a chassis mod shop and it's pretty cheap. Each increase does add a little bit of weight to your tank, but it's usually worth it if you rely on those specific tanks a lot.

Ammo for Guns: Essential for SE Weapons

This is where modification really shines, especially for those Special Equipment (SE) guns. Increasing the ammo capacity for these isn't cheap – the cost varies depending on the weapon – but it's absolutely worth it if you love using them. You can even upgrade the ammo for some SE guns up to three times, letting them carry up to 50 shells! Don't forget your Main guns either; if you've got a powerful Main gun that chews through ammo, consider upgrading that too.

Defense: Chassis is Key

You might be tempted to decrease the defense on some of the heavier SE guns, but I found it to be too expensive and generally better to just juggle lighter guns. However, increasing the defense on certain parts can be super helpful. I'd highly recommend doing this for the chassis on every tank you use. Why? If you don't, and other parts on your tank get wrecked, the chassis could break, potentially ejecting you from the tank. Keep that chassis beefy!
