Master combat in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with our guide covering melee, ranged, finishers, dodging, and magical Signs like Aard, Axii, Igni, Quen, and Yrden. Learn alchemy too!

This guide covers the fundamental gameplay mechanics of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, focusing on combat and alchemy.

Combat Techniques

Melee Combat
Geralt uses a Silver Sword for monsters and a Steel Sword for humanoids. He has fast and heavy attacks, which can be enhanced with skill points in the Combat tree. Advanced abilities include Whirl (AoE spinning attack) and Rend (armor-piercing overhead slash).

Ranged Combat
Geralt is equipped with a crossbow. Aiming slows time slightly. Different bolts can be crafted for various effects. The Marksmanship skill tree can enhance crossbow abilities like slow time while aiming and critical hit damage.

Finisher Attacks
Once an enemy's health is low, a button prompt appears for a stylish execution. Automatic finishers are enabled by default but can be toggled off.

Avoiding Attacks
Geralt can block most melee attacks, but it's less effective against magical damage. Staggering involves timing a block just before an enemy attack to deflect and stun them. Dodging allows for quick sidesteps to avoid attacks, while Rolling creates more distance, useful against large bosses.

Magical Signs
Geralt can use five magical Signs, consuming Stamina: AARD (force push, breaks walls), AXII (stuns enemies, used in dialogue), IGNI (fire wave, causes burning), QUEN (protective barrier), and YRDEN (magical trap, slows enemies, affects ghosts).

Alchemy, Potions, Oils and Bombs
Witchers can craft alchemical items. Recipes are bought, found, or rewarded. Once crafted, Geralt automatically replenishes them upon meditating, provided he has sufficient alcohol. Types include Bombs with various effects.
