Learn essential combat techniques, including melee, ranged attacks, signs, and alchemy, to conquer foes in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Essential tips for beginners.
Welcome to our beginner's guide for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt! This section covers the fundamental combat mechanics to help you survive and thrive in the Northern Realms.
Melee Combat
Geralt wields two swords: a Silver Sword for monsters and a Steel Sword for humanoids. You can switch between them, though Geralt often auto-selects the correct one. Basic attacks include Fast/Heavy attacks. Fast attacks are quicker but deal less damage, while Heavy attacks are slower but more damaging. Use Heavy attacks on unaware or stunned enemies. Skill points in the Combat tree can unlock advanced abilities like Whirl (AoE spin) and Rend (armor-piercing slash).
Ranged Combat
A crossbow is available for ranged attacks. Time slows slightly when aiming, giving you more time to target. Different bolts can be crafted for various effects. The Marksmanship skill tree can enhance aiming, critical damage, and enemy ability disabling.
Finisher Attacks
Once an enemy's health is low, a button prompt may appear for a stylish finisher. These are enabled by default but can be toggled off. Disabling them is recommended for higher difficulties.
Avoiding Attacks
Geralt can Block, Stagger, Dodge, and Roll. Blocking nullifies most melee attacks but is less effective against magical or elemental damage. Staggering (timing a block just before an attack) can deflect and stun enemies. Dodging is a quick sidestep to avoid attacks, useful against unblockable strikes. Rolling covers more distance, better for large boss attacks. The Defense skill tree offers enhancements like Deflect Arrows.
Magical Signs
Geralt can cast five Signs, consuming Stamina. These include AARD (force push, breaks weak walls), AXII (stuns, influences conversations), IGNI (fire damage, lights torches), QUEN (defensive barrier), and YRDEN (slows enemies, traps ghosts). Alternate modes and bonuses can be unlocked in the Sign Skill Tree.
Alchemy: Potions, Oils, and Bombs
Geralt can craft alchemical items. Recipes are found or bought. Once crafted, they replenish upon meditation if you have alcohol. Items include Bombs (grenade-like effects), Potions (buffs like health regen, increased damage, but raise Toxicity), Oils (weapon enhancements against specific enemy types), and Decoctions (special buffs against specific enemies). Mutagens are also craftable reagents for enhancing abilities.
Advanced Combat Tips
Utilize the environment! Use AARD to push enemies off ledges or destroy beehives. Combining signs and environmental elements can provide a significant advantage.
