Explore comprehensive combat tactics for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Learn about melee, ranged, signs, alchemy, and defensive maneuvers to dominate every encounter.
This guide covers the essential combat techniques and alchemical preparations for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, helping you master Geralt's fighting abilities.
Melee Combat
Geralt's primary damage source comes from his two swords: Steel for humanoids and Silver for monsters. Players can switch between them, though Geralt often auto-selects the appropriate sword. Basic attacks include Fast and Heavy attacks, with Heavy attacks dealing more damage but having a longer wind-up. Skill points invested in the Combat tree can unlock powerful abilities like Whirl (AoE spinning attack) and Rend (armor-ignoring slash).
Ranged Combat
Geralt is equipped with a crossbow for ranged attacks. Time slows slightly when aiming, allowing for precise shots. Different bolts can be crafted to alter attack effects. The Marksmanship skill tree offers enhancements like further time dilation while aiming and increased critical hit damage.
Finisher Attacks
When an enemy's health is low, a button prompt appears for a stylish execution. These finishers can make Geralt invincible on lower difficulties, offering a brief respite. Automatic finishers are enabled by default but can be toggled off.
Avoiding Attacks
Geralt can avoid damage through Blocking, Staggering, Dodging, and Rolling. Blocking nullifies most melee attacks but is less effective against elemental or magical damage. Staggering, achieved by timing a block just before an enemy attack, deflects and temporarily stuns foes. Dodging allows for quick sidesteps to evade attacks, while Rolling covers more distance, useful against large bosses. The Defence skill tree offers abilities like Deflect Arrows.
Magical Signs
Geralt can cast five magical Signs, consuming Stamina. Each Sign has a base effect and can be upgraded or have alternate modes unlocked in the Sign Skill Tree:
- AARD: A telekinetic push that can knock down or stagger enemies. Can also be used to destroy weak walls.
- AXII: Temporarily stuns a single enemy. Can also be used in dialogue or to calm animals.
- IGNI: A wave of fire that damages enemies and can set them ablaze, causing damage over time. Useful for lighting torches and certain quests.
- QUEN: Creates a protective barrier that drastically improves defense, draining Stamina over time.
- YRDEN: Places a magical trap on the ground that slows enemies and, for spectral foes, makes them vulnerable.
Alchemy, Potions, Oils and Bombs
Witchers are skilled in alchemy, creating items that provide buffs and combat advantages. Recipes can be found or purchased, and once crafted, Geralt can automatically replenish them by meditating if he has sufficient alcohol. Alchemy items include:
- Bombs: Various types with different effects, used like grenades.
- Potions: Offer a wide range of buffs for use in and out of combat.
