Contract: Devil by the Well

Alright, let's get started on your first Witcher contract in _The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt_: Contract: Devil by the Well. You can pick this one up from the notice board in White Orchard, or by heading straight to the ruined village "Abandoned Village (White Orchard)") and speaking with [Odolan](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Odolan "Odolan"). Odolan's daughter, [Mandy](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Mandy "Mandy"), is sick, and he needs fresh water from the well in the abandoned village. The problem? A [devil](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Devil_by_the_Well "Devil by the Well") – a [noonwraith](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Noonwraith "Noonwraith") – is haunting it. He'll offer you a purse of [gold](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Crown "Crown") for your trouble. You can haggle a bit for a better reward if you like. Investigate the Well Head to the ruined village "Abandoned Village (White Orchard)"). If you arrive during the day, you'll see the noonwraith circling the well. She won't bother you if you keep your distance, so you can check out the huts first. Make your way to the easternmost hut. Inside, you'll find a [yellowed diary](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Yellowed_diary "Yellowed diary") written by a woman named [Claer](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Claer "Claer"). Examine the skeleton nearby, and [Geralt](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Geralt_of_Rivia "Geralt of Rivia") will notice more blood. Follow the blood trail back to the hut's doorway and examine the area there. If the noonwraith isn't active, you can also check the scorched area and body around the well, and the rope on the well itself. If she *is* out and you don't want to wait, you can approach her and fight. She'll eventually flee, allowing you to investigate. Examine the rope on the well. You'll find a skeleton and Geralt will deduce that a [bracelet](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Ornate_bracelet "Ornate bracelet") likely fell into the well. This is key to getting rid of the noonwraith permanently. Jump into the well and use your [Witcher Senses](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Witcher_Senses "Witcher Senses") to locate the bracelet at the bottom. Climb out and Geralt will examine it. Then, follow the path to another pool of water, dive in, and follow the underwater cavern out of the cave. Dealing with the Noonwraith Before heading back to the well, it's a good idea to prepare. Craft some [Specter Oil](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Specter_Oil "Specter Oil") for your silver sword and brew some [Potions](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/The_Witcher_3_potions "Potions") like Swallow. Once you're ready, return to the well. Burn the skeleton and the bracelet, and the noonwraith will appear, no matter the time of day. Use the [Yrden](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Yrden "Yrden") sign to trap her and make her vulnerable. Be ready for her to split into three lesser noonwraiths – take them out quickly, as she'll try to heal herself during this time. After you defeat her, loot her body for the [Noonwraith trophy](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Noonwraith_trophy "Noonwraith trophy") (which grants 50 [XP](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/XP "XP")). Return to Odolan Head back to Odolan. He'll be relieved and offer you the agreed-upon reward: 50 [XP](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/XP "XP") and 20 [Crown](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Crown "Crown"). You can choose to refuse the payment, in which case you'll still get the XP but receive an [amethyst](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Amethyst "Amethyst") instead of coin. Odolan might mention that [Tomira](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Tomira "Tomira") knew of a woman named Claer. If you speak with Tomira after this, she'll share more details about what happened to the village and give you a small reward: 10 [XP](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/XP "XP"), 10 [Crown](https://witcher.fandom.com/wiki/Crown "Crown"), and some alchemy ingredients.
