Learn about explosives like Red Barrels, Gasoline Cans, and Remote Explosives, plus the 278 Challenges in Hitman: Absolution.
Explosives:
These items can be used to quickly clear an area of enemies and serve as a distraction.
- Red Barrels and Propane Canisters: These items ignite when shot and will eventually explode. They cannot be picked up or moved around.
- Gasoline Can: Available in chapters: The King of Chinatown, Terminus, Hunter and Hunted, Rosewood, Birdie's Gift, Shaving Lenny, Dexter Industries, Death Factory, Fight Night, Attack of the Saints, Operation Sledgehammer, Blackwater Park, Absolution. This works like Red Barrels and Propane Canisters, igniting when shot. However, you can pick this up and carry it with you. You can also toss it for distractions or use it as a melee weapon.
- Remote Explosive: Available in chapters: The King of Chinatown, Run For Your Life, Hunted and Hunted, Shaving Lenny, Dexter Industries, Death Factory, Fight Night, Attack of the Saints, Operation Sledgehammer, Absolution. This explosive can be detonated at your leisure. Drop it and arm it to bring up the Detonator. Throwing it will also automatically arm it and serve as a distraction. You can also shoot it to detonate it.
- C4 Brick: Available in the chapter: Fight Night. This is similar to the Remote Explosive except it works on a timer. Arm it to start the countdown. Throwing it will also start the timer.
- Proximity Mine: Available in chapters: Dexter Industries, Death Factory, Operation Sledgehammer, Blackwater Park, Absolution. This mine explodes when someone gets close to it. Drop it, arm it, and walk away. The next person who gets close to it, including yourself, will detonate it. Throwing it will also arm it and lure anyone close enough. Once armed, it cannot be disarmed. Shooting it once arms it, and shooting it again detonates it. You can use this as a melee weapon, but it is not recommended as it will arm the moment you hit somebody and explode in your hand.
Challenges:
In eighteen of the twenty chapters, there will be Challenges that can be completed to add to the Score Modifier and improve your overall scoring. These are optional, but there are three Accomplishments you can acquire for completing a set number of them.
These Challenges involve playing the section in certain ways and doing certain things. Some are easy and you may get them without trying, others require a little effort, and a handful can be considered annoying.
You cannot complete any Challenges on the Easy difficulty. The easiest difficulty to do them is on Normal. None of the Challenges are based on doing them at a set difficulty, although you can try for them at higher difficulties.
When you have successfully completed a Challenge, it is considered permanently done and you don't have to worry about it anymore, even if you quit out of the game or do a Checkpoint (an auto-save point you restart from on death) Restart immediately after finishing it.
There are a total of 278 Challenges, and you need to complete at least 100 of them to acquire the last Accomplishment tied to them.
There are certain Challenges common to each chapter:
- Suit Only: This means you must complete the section in the suit you came in with. The easiest way to do this, at least on Normal, is to Rampage through the chapter killing the Guards and knocking out the Civilians (non-player characters).
- Chameleon: You must collect all of the Disguises listed in the chapter by wearing them at least once. Similar to the Suit Only Challenge, rampaging your way through is the best way to acquire them, although there are chapters in which...
- Environmental explosives like Red Barrels and Gasoline Cans are great for creating chain reactions and clearing out groups of enemies quickly.
- Remote Explosives and Proximity Mines offer more tactical placement options for ambushes or luring enemies.
- Do not attempt to use the Proximity Mine as a melee weapon, as it will detonate in your hand.
- Complete Challenges on Normal difficulty for the easiest experience.
- Completing Challenges is permanent, so don't worry about replaying sections if you accidentally fail one after completing it.
