Explore the Van Elm Region in Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Discover new enemies like the Apprentice Scumbag and Man-Eating Tree, find valuable treasures, and learn how to obtain the Faerie Orchid to progress.
The Van Elm Region is a new area you will explore on your journey. It is south of Triom Village and east of the Silent Forest. To reach Triom Village again, you need to go south through the Van Elm Region and then east through the Silent Forest. Passage through the Silent Forest is blocked unless you have the Faerie Orchid. You can find the Faerie Orchid at the southern tip of the Van Elm Region, on the shore of Lake Aegis. Its location is marked as a Point of Interest on your map.
You will encounter new enemies in the Van Elm Region. The Apprentice Scumbag likes to steal Fol from you and then escape the battle. If a Scumbag successfully steals from you, defeat it before it flees and you can recover the stolen Fol. Defeat one and you will acquire Weapon Data 140: Cheap Dagger. If you defeat enough Apprentice Scumbags to raise the analysis level to 100% in your Monster Data, you can transfer the data to a Monster Jewel. Then you will have an accessory with the factor, +15% Fol after each battle.
Watch out for the Man-Eating Tree's Bonus Board-busting attacks. Once you enter the Silent Forest, you will begin encountering Man-Eating Trees. They can cast Earth Glaive, or attack you with vines and fruit bombs. It is easy to lose your Bonus Board, especially if they are in Rush Mode. When you defeat one, it may drop a Fire Gem. You need Fire Gems to fulfill a Shop Order and to create the Flame Sword for another Shop Order. Raise the level of Reimi's Botany skill to increase the drop rate and boost your chances to acquire Fire Gems.
If you accepted The Curious Kitty Quest, you can find Sir Francis in the Silent Forest. Its location is marked on your map (as a person). To complete the Quest, you will need to return Sir Francis to the Foolhardy Girl in the Woodley item shop, either now or later. Search the area near where you found the kitty to discover a Hidden Harvesting Point.
Exit the Silent Forest to the east and you will be back on Thalia Plains. Follow the path east and cross the bridge south to return to Triom Village. Talk to Ghimdo in his house and you will learn that another celestial ship crashed on Lemuris months ago. It may be the source of the Bacculus. The ship is past the Wind Swallow Valley and Ghimdo gives you Fire Ring x1 to help you reach it.
You can find the Fire Ring in your item inventory, listed under Valuables. It is a Disintegration Ring that lets you remove elemental objects. It can hold 20 charges, but it has no charges now. Talk to the Shady Sorcerer east of the village center and she will fully charge the ring for you. The first time is free but if you ask her to charge the ring again after you use it, you will have to pay her 800 Fol fee. You can use the ring now to remove the ice barrier on the treasure chest in the southern part of the village to obtain Recipe Memo 02 and an Earth Gem x1. The Recipe will allow you to make the Earthsoul Bow through Item Creation. Speak with the Big-Hearted Man again and he will give you Bigberries x3 and Basil x3.
Leave the village by the northeast exit. Wind Swallow Valley is east of the Thalia Plains. Before you go there, you can stop by Alanaire Citadel. Use the Fire Ring to remove the ice barrier and open the Treasure Chest on the east side of the ground floor. Inside, you will find a Dragon Scale x1 and Fire Gem x1 (not available on Xbox 360 version). Exit the Citadel and cross Thalia Plains to reach Wind Swallow Valley.
