Learn how to find and catch the legendary Pokémon Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Regirock, Regice, and Registeel in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire with this detailed walkthrough.
There are a number of legendary Pokémon you can catch right now in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
GROUDON
To catch Groudon, you need to go to the Weather Institute. On the second floor, talk to the scientist near the computer who tracks strange weather. He'll tell you a drought was recorded on a specific route, indicating that the Terra Cave has formed there and Groudon is inside. You must reach it quickly, as the cave's location is temporary. Here are all the possible cave locations:
- Route 114, at the top of the waterfall in the NW corner
- Route 114, near the Meteor Falls entrance
- Route 115, at the top of the steps where all the trainers are in the far north part
- Route 115, at the top of a slope next to the above location (requires Mach Bike)
- Route 116, to the top of the steps and to the right of the Rusturf Tunnel
- Route 116, at the top of the steps near the guy looking for his glasses
- Route 118, to the west of the body of water
- Route 118, to the east of the body of water (near Route 119 entrance)
Once you find the cave, enter it and save your game. Approach Groudon and initiate the battle. Groudon will activate Sunny Day for the entire battle, but his Solarbeam attack is not a significant threat due to his Ground typing. Lower his health as much as possible and inflict paralysis or sleep. Then, use Ultra Balls or Timer Balls until you capture him.
KYOGRE
The process for catching Kyogre is similar to Groudon's. Speak with the same scientist at the Weather Institute, and he will inform you about recorded instances of heavy rainfall. When this occurs on a particular route, a temporary patch of dark water appears, allowing you to Dive underwater and enter the Marine Cave. If you miss this opportunity, the location will change. Here are the possible locations:
- Route 105, to the south of the cave where Regice is found
- Route 105, to the east of the biggest island with trainers
- Route 125, to the north and west of the Shoal Cave
- Route 125, to the east of the patches of islands to the right of the Shoal Cave
- Route 127, to the north of the island with 3 fishermen
- Route 127, to the south of the island with 3 fishermen (requires navigating around rocks)
- Route 129, in the extreme southeast corner
- Route 129, in the central part of the route next to a swimmer
Once you locate the dark water patch, dive into it and save your game. Inside the cave, swim across the water to reach another cave entrance. Save your game again before proceeding to Kyogre and starting the battle.
Kyogre's Drizzle ability will activate Rain Dance for the entire battle. If you have Thunder, use it to weaken him significantly. Grass-type attacks are also effective. One of Kyogre's moves is Shear Cold, which can instantly knock out your Pokémon if it hits. It also has Rest, which puts it to sleep for two turns and restores all its health. Kyogre also uses Hydro Pump and Double Edge, so be prepared for strong attacks.
Try to put Kyogre to sleep yourself and gradually reduce its HP. Heal your Pokémon as needed and bring plenty of Ultra Balls and Timer Balls. After a challenging fight, you will eventually capture it.
RAYQUAZA
Rayquaza can be captured after you resolve the crisis in Sootopolis City involving Groudon and Kyogre. He is located in the Sky Pillar, and the Mach Bike is required. Reaching him is more challenging due to earthquake-damaged floor tiles that cause you to fall to previous floors with a single step. Even with the Mach Bike, navigating the difficult corners requires quick reflexes.
Upon entering the Sky Pillar, proceed to the northeast corner of the room. On the second floor, use your Mach Bike to speed past the first two sets of damaged floors. Head left, and upon reaching the southwest corner, immediately go north to ascend to the third floor, being careful not to fall through the weakened floor.
On the third floor, simply navigate the room to find the staircase to the fourth floor. The fourth floor is particularly difficult and may require several attempts. Without stopping, use your Mach Bike to travel clockwise around the room, avoiding obstacles. The staircase to the next floor is blocked. In the north-central part of the room, you will find four damaged floor tiles. Step on the first one and fall through either the second or third tile. Downstairs, ascend the staircase directly in front of you. Then, go up the staircase to your left. Finally, proceed counter-clockwise around the room to reach another staircase, which leads to the floor where Rayquaza awaits.
Save your game and begin the battle. Rayquaza is level 70 and is Dragon/Flying type, so bring a Dragon, Ice, or Rock Pokémon. Its attacks are Rest, Outrage, Extremespeed, and Fly. The best strategy is to put it to sleep and then lower its health. If it wakes up and uses Rest, use a powerful attack to bring its health back down to at least orange/red. If it uses Outrage, it will attack for 2-3 turns before becoming confused. When it uses Fly, it's best to heal yourself while it's airborne.
Once Rayquaza is asleep and its health is low, use Ultra Balls or Timer Balls to capture it. You can use this powerful Pokémon immediately or save it for later.
REGIROCK/REGICE/REGISTEEL
Before you can capture these three Pokémon, you must solve a puzzle to unlock their chambers. You will need a Pokémon that knows Dig, as well as Wailord and Relicanth. Additionally, ensure you have a Pokémon capable of using Dive.
