Your ultimate guide to catching every Pokémon in the Ruby & Sapphire Safari Zone! Learn about each area, Pokémon locations, and tips for success.

Alright, so you've made it to the Safari Zone in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire! This is where you'll find some of the rarest Pokémon in the game, but it's a bit different from your usual catching experience. You'll need $500 to enter, and you've got a limit of 500 steps or 30 Poké Balls before your time is up. The zone is split into six areas (A-F), but right now, you can only access D, A, and B. Areas E and F will open up after you beat the Elite Four. We're going to start in Area D.

A few things to keep in mind about the Safari Zone: you can't use your own Pokémon to battle or weaken wild Pokémon here. It's all about luck and strategy with the items you have. Throwing rocks can make Pokémon easier to catch, but they might also run away faster. Pokeblocks can also influence whether a Pokémon stays or flees – a Pokémon that likes a certain flavor of Pokeblock will stick around longer, while one that dislikes it might bolt.

There are also special gray tiles in some grass patches. If you toss a Pokeblock into one of these, it'll attract Pokémon whose natures align with that Pokeblock's flavor. It's a neat way to increase your chances of finding specific Pokémon!

Safari Zone Area D Pokémon:

  • Oddish (Common)
  • Girafarig (Common)
  • Natu (Uncommon)
  • Doduo (Uncommon)
  • Wobbuffet (Uncommon)
  • Pikachu (Rare)
  • Gloom (Rare)

In Area D, you'll find Pokémon like Girafarig, a Psychic/Normal type that's immune to Ghost attacks. Doduo, a Normal/Flying type, evolves into the speedy Dodrio. Natu is a Psychic/Flying type, but honestly, it's not the strongest, and even its evolution, Xatu, doesn't improve much. Pikachu is here too, and if you evolve it with a Thunderstone, it becomes Raichu, which is pretty awesome, especially if it already knows Thunderbolt.

When you first enter the Safari Zone, head into the grass nearby. If you go north and then right, you'll see two guards blocking the path to Areas E and F. To get to other areas, you'll need specific bikes. If you have the Acro Bike, you can head to Area C. If you have the Mach Bike, you can access Areas A and B.

Getting to Area C:

To reach Area C, head north and west from where those guards were. You'll find some steps; go up them. At the top, you'll see ledges to your right. You'll need the Acro Bike to hop across these. Keep going north and east, and when the signboard in the top-left corner says "Safari Zone," you'll know you've arrived in Area C.

Safari Zone Area C Pokémon:

  • Phanpy (Common)
  • Oddish (Common)
  • Natu (Uncommon)
  • Gloom (Uncommon)
  • Xatu (Rare)
  • Heracross (Rare)

Area C introduces Phanpy, a Ground-type that evolves into the powerful Donphan, which learns Earthquake. Heracross is also a standout here – it's a Bug/Fighting type and one of the best Bug Pokémon available. It gets the powerful Megahorn attack and has good speed, making it great for taking down Psychic-types. Just be careful, as its Fighting type makes it weak to Flying Pokémon.

Once you're done in Area C, the first grass patch is to the west. Head north from there, go down some steps, and continue north. You'll find another patch of grass, but watch out for that Calcium item nearby!
