The world map in Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is presented in a third-person isometric view. You can rotate the camera using the R1/L1 buttons and shift perspective with R2. Instead of rushing to the Fire Cavern, follow Quistis's advice to stock up on magic. In battles, use the “Draw” command to “Stock” magic into your inventory. You can also cast drawn magic immediately, like Cure, to heal characters.

Quezacotl has Mag-J (junction to Magic) and can learn HP-J and Vit-J. Shiva has Spr-J (junction to Spirit) and can learn Str-J and Vit-J. AP is earned by defeating enemies with a GF equipped, without gaining EXP. This allows for powerful character development without high levels.

Characters with Quezacotl can junction magic to Magic, and those with Shiva to Spirit. If a character has both GFs, they can junction to both stats, but spreading GFs is recommended for important abilities on all characters. Only one spell can be junctioned per attribute. More powerful and rarer spells with larger stocks yield greater stat boosts. Junctioned spells can be cast, but this lowers stats, so it's generally avoided. Cure junctioned to Spirit and Sleep to Magic offer notable, though small, initial gains.

Ensure your GFs learn useful abilities. In the GF menu, select a GF (e.g., Quezacotl), choose “Learn,” and select an ability. Have Quezacotl learn “Card” and Shiva learn “Str-J.”

Save your game and proceed to the Fire Cavern. Upon arrival, head towards the entrance. You'll encounter tutorials from Quistis on junctioning magic and using your gunblade. After these, speak with the two Balamb employees at the cave entrance to receive your mission: hunt a “low-level GF.”
