Learn how to add factors to weapons and optimize synthesis costs in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Details on NPC inventors and patenting.
Walkthrough
- 1Understand Synthesis: Synthesis adds factors to weapons. The process never fails, and factors are added in order. A weapon can have a maximum of 8 factors. If 8 factors are present, the weapon cannot be selected for Synthesis. Factors cannot be removed or replaced, except on ultimate weapons through refining.
- 2Synthesis Cost Formula: The cost is calculated as (1+a+b)(v+t)/m, where 'v' is the total value of factors in the consumed item, 't' is the total value of the receiving item (base item value + y), and 'm' is the number of factors in the consumed item. You pay the cost of the resulting item.
- 3Optimize Synthesis Costs:
- 4Synth factors in order from cheapest to most expensive.
- 5Leave a factor partially unrefined and refine it after synthing.
- 6Synth all factors into a cheap carrier weapon first, then synth that into the actual weapon. This costs an extra synth kit but is worthwhile in the post-game.
- 7Synth Material Kits: You can obtain approximately 20 kits on Disc 1, 60 on Disc 2, and 40 in the post-game. A couple of infinite sources become available in the post-game.
- 8Recruit NPC Inventors: Recruit NPC inventors to get the best items. There are 28 in total, available in groups of 3 as you progress. Do not fill all workshops, as an empty one loads faster. Early NPC inventors are not very useful.
- 9NPC Inventor Activity: Recruited inventors use your money. Set them on standby to save money, as there's no guarantee they'll create useful items. NPC inventors can create items beyond their normal skill level and even if the assigned workshop lacks necessary facilities.
- 10Patenting Items: Use the Invention Info menu to patent items you create or find. Equipped items cannot be reviewed. Creating and patenting many different items yields only the items themselves and a sense of accomplishment. Make a copy of the IC list to mark created items.
- 11Item Availability After Patenting: Patented items become available in limited quantities at specific stores after spending 6 minutes on the field (timer does not run in towns, menus, or battles).
- 12If you patent 32 items without enough field time for them to clear, patenting another item makes the first available and replaces it in the queue.
- 13Stock is shared across all shops carrying the item. Stock may increase if an inventor creates more of it. Creating items manually does not increase stock.
- 14Items patented by you or your recruited NPCs are available at a lower price. Items patented by non-recruited NPCs, or NPCs before recruitment, have a higher price.
- 15Price Formula: Own: (0.4 - 0.002c)z; Other: (2.0 - 0.01c)z, where 'z' is the base retail value and 'c' is the number of said item in stock.
- 16Workshop Location: Use the workshop in Peterny for most Invention Creation (IC) due to its proximity to a save point.
- 17Field Time Bonus: Every 30 minutes on the field, you receive a small amount of money based on IC accomplishments (likely a 4-digit figure). Playtime and Fayt's ranking are significant factors.
- 18Welch Scenes: Accessing the Invention Info screen can trigger unskippable scenes involving Welch. There are 8 in total: the first two after 4 hours each, and the remaining ones every 8 hours.
- 19Tavern "The Biting Kid" Events:
- 20Strange Man events occur with specific PA (Private Action) values.
- 21Luxury Inn "The Front Door" Events:
- 22[Scene058]: Talk to the lady at the counter.
- 23[Scene060]: Talk to Nel and reply "Yeah, I'm done."
- 24[Scene061]: Exit the inn.
- 25Peterny Events:
- 26[Scene059]: Approach Ameena's house.
- 27Next Destination: West.
- 28Sanmite Steppe Items: Smithery Materials, Cooking Ingredients, Blackberries, Perfect Berri.
Tips
- Consider the random variable 'b' for synthesis, which ranges from -0.05 to 0.05 in increments of 0.01.
- The ultimate weapons are exceptions where debilitating factors can be removed by refining.
- It's well worth using a cheap carrier weapon for synthing in the post-game.
- Set recruited inventors on standby to save money, as their creations are not guaranteed to be useful.
- If you plan to patent many items, make a copy of the IC list to track your progress.
- The timer for item availability in stores only advances when you are on the field, not in towns, menus, or battles.
