Learn the basics of Pokémon battles in Sun and Moon, from choosing moves to understanding battle outcomes and gaining experience. Your ultimate guide to becoming a Pokémon Master!

Hey there! So, you're diving into Pokémon Sun and Moon and want to get a handle on how battles work? Awesome! Whether you're facing off against a feisty wild Pokémon or a rival trainer, the core mechanics are pretty much the same. Most of the time, it's just your Pokémon versus theirs, one-on-one.

When you start a battle, the Pokémon you send out first is always the one at the top-left of your party. If that little guy faints, don't worry, the next one in line will jump right in to take its place.

Choosing Your Moves

Once you select 'Fight,' you'll get to pick one of your Pokémon's moves. Remember, each Pokémon can learn up to 4 moves. You can teach them new moves as they level up, evolve, or by using special TM items. If your Pokémon is already at its 4-move limit and wants to learn a new one, you'll have to choose between ditching an old move or skipping the new one. Tough choices, right?

Moves aren't just about dealing damage, though. Some can inflict status effects like poison or paralysis, or even do a bit of both! Each move has a PP (Power Point) value, which is basically its ammo count – use it too much, and you'll run out before you can heal it up. Also, every Pokémon and move has a Type (some Pokémon even have two!). These Types, like Fire, Grass, or the super cool Fairy type, are super important because they massively affect how much damage is dealt. For the full rundown on who beats who, definitely check out the Type Match-Up page!

Battle Outcomes

After you've picked your move, the Pokémon with the higher Speed stat gets to go first. If it's a damage-dealing move, it'll chip away at the opponent's HP. Once a Pokémon's HP hits zero, it faints and is out of the fight.

The cool part? When you faint an opponent's Pokémon (or catch a wild one), yours gets experience! Rack up enough experience, and your Pokémon will Level Up, boosting its stats, maybe learning new moves, or even evolving into something even more powerful. How awesome is that?

Battles against wild Pokémon end as soon as you defeat or catch them. But if you're battling another trainer, they might just send out another Pokémon to keep the fight going. Trainers can have up to 6 Pokémon, though most usually stick to around 3. The battle wraps up when one trainer runs out of Pokémon – the winner is whoever has at least one left standing. Besides that sweet experience, you'll also snag some Poke Dollars (that's money!) for winning against other trainers.
