Master Pokémon Diamond and Pearl with our comprehensive guide to key terms, including Pokedex numbers, types, locations, abilities, egg groups, moves, and base stats.

This guide explains the key terms used in the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Pokédex entries to help you understand each Pokémon's details.

Key Terms Explained:

Number:
The current Pokédex number of the Pokémon.
Pokemon Name:
The name of the Pokémon.
Type:
The element type(s) of the Pokémon. A Pokémon can have up to two types, and its form may affect its type.
Location:
Where the Pokémon can be found in the game.
Evolution Line:
A list of Pokémon that this Pokémon can evolve into, or that can evolve into it.
Ability:
The special ability a Pokémon may have upon being encountered. If a Pokémon has one ability, it will always have that ability. If it has two, there's a chance it will have either upon capture or hatching. Abilities can change upon evolution.
Egg Group:
Hidden values that determine which Pokémon can breed together. The names used are based on the Nintendo Power Guide.
Moves:
Battle moves a Pokémon can learn through leveling up. Some moves require a move teacher and specific items (like a Heart Scale), while others are learned by not evolving or by evolving at a certain point. Move lists can vary slightly in special editions and are significantly changed between generations.
Egg Moves:
Moves that can only be learned when a parent Pokémon knows the move. These are pre-set for each Pokédex entry and generally only change with new generations.
TM and HM List:
A list of Technical Machines (TMs) and Hidden Machines (HMs) that a Pokémon can learn. Notes will indicate if only a specific Pokémon in an evolution line can learn a particular TM or HM.
Base Stats:
An overview of a Pokémon's potential stats. These are not the starting stats but give a general idea of a Pokémon's strengths. Stats 50 or below are considered average, 60-80 are average to good, and 90+ are above average.
Move Tutors:
NPCs in Generation III and IV who can teach Pokémon specific moves. These moves can be transferred to Generation IV. Pokémon from XD gain moves by being purified. Note that move tutors and their offerings may differ in later generations.
