Learn how Personalities affect stat growths in Dragon Quest III. Discover how to determine and change your character's Personality for optimal party builds.

Personalities were added to the remakes (SNES, GBC, Mobile, Switch) of Dragon Quest 3. The purpose of Personalities is to effect a character's attribute growths on level up. By default, every class has fixed stat growths for every attribute. Personalities let you modify these growths to make them more or less beneficial.

Personalities are assigned to each character upon creation. The Hero is a bit of an exception as they must go through a complex quiz to obtain one of 30 out of 45 possible Personalities. The other classes, which are created at Patty's Party Planning, get their starting Personality based on their starting attributes. Upon character creation, each class first starts with fixed attributes, then the character can receive from 2 to 10 additional random modifiers, and finally you can boost stats up to five times giving the character their final starting attributes. The game will then look at these attributes and perform complex calculations to determine the starting Personality for the character. Using this knowledge, you could try to manipulate your party members' stats in order to get the exact Personality you want for each. Now this can take some time to achieve.

The calculation to determine starting Personality is fairly simple. First, take the character's final attributes and subtract their base attributes (sometimes different between male and female) from it to get the bonus modifiers for each attribute. Next, look to see which attribute increased the most. Then determine how much that attribute actually grew. Finally, you may need to check to see which attribute grew the second most. You would use this information to look through a series of tables (see each character section) to determine which group of possible Personalities the character can obtain. Below is an example for a Male Warrior:

StrengthAgilityResilienceWisdomLuck
Final1651134
Base92923
Modifier73211

The highest stat growth is Strength by 7 with Agility being second. This means the starting Personality will either be Meathead (44.44%), Idealist (33.33%) or Thug (22.22%).

Personalities are not finite upon character creation. You can permanently change a character's Personality through books or you can temporarily change the Personality by equipping Accessories.

Below is the full list of Personalities, which Gender can access the Personality, how the Personality effects attributes, and Books & Accessories that are associated with each Personality, if any. Be sure to look at the Average column as it will tell you if you are getting an overall positive or negative boost.
