Learn about Gunner, Axe, and Staff skills in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, including their effects and unlock levels.

Gunner Skills:

  1. Lv. 1 - Tri-Burst: Hits one enemy one square away in a straight line for three ice hits, each doing about half the damage of a regular attack.
  2. Lv. 3 - Rapidfire: Hits an enemy four squares away, requiring the space three squares away as well. Hits for fire damage.
  3. Lv. 6 - Proximal Shot: Hits the enemy right next to you for pretty good damage, requiring the three spaces behind the gunner.
  4. Lv. 10 - Bullet Storm: A stronger version of Tri-Burst that hits an enemy three squares away with non-ice elemental damage.
  5. Lv. 15 - Totenkreuz: Hits one target anywhere within four squares of the gunner for fire elemental damage.
  6. Lv. 20 - Inferno: Hits within five spaces, dealing devastating damage that is not fire elemental, even more so than Totenkreuz.

Axes:

Axes are the strongest of the four melee weapons in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, hitting the hardest but decreasing the user's HIT. They are best suited for warriors and are excellent for taking down single strong bosses, as their skills primarily target adjacent enemies.

  • Lv. 1 - Boulder Crush: Hits the character right next to you twice, each blow slightly weaker than a normal attack.
  • Lv. 3 - Skull Splitter: Hits the character right next to you four times, each exactly half the power of a normal attack.
  • Lv. 6 - Colossal Fissure: Hits the character right next to you for significant damage.
  • Lv. 10 - Violent Storm: Hits the character right next to you several times.
  • Lv. 15 - Graviton Bomb: Hits the character right next to you for amazing fire elemental damage, unless the enemy is strong against fire.
  • Lv. 21 - Calamity Drive: Hits the character right next to you for damage more than triple regular attacks, unless the enemy is weak to fire.

Staves:

Staves are unique as they do not earn their own skills. Instead, they increase a user's INT stat and provide added power, area, and range for spells. They are recommended for skulls, mages, clerics, and Flonne.

Outside Battle Mechanics:

The game is divided into 14 chapters, starting in the Overlord's Castle. Here you can access the Dimension Guide to travel to any location, shops, the Item World, and the Dark Congress.

Hospital:

After battles, you must visit the hospital to recover HP and SP, and to revive incapacitated characters. Recovery costs HL (money). Recovering a lot of HP grants Muscles (HP increase), SP grants Orbs (SP increase), incapacitated characters grant recovery items, and recovering all together grants Emblems (best equipment, increases all stats).

Shops:

There are two shops: one for weapons and one for armor and items. Shops start with the first three (crappiest) ranks of 40 available qualities. Your Customer Rank must increase, which can be petitioned at the Dark Congress, to access stronger items.

Tips
  • When using Axes, be mindful of the HIT decrease and equip powerful axes at a decent character level.
  • Axes are not ideal for clearing multiple enemies but excel against single, strong bosses.
  • For Staves, prioritize using spells over special techniques.
  • Ensure characters like clerics actually use staves if they are recommended for them.
  • When using Graviton Bomb or Calamity Drive, check if the enemy is weak or resistant to fire.
