Learn how to defeat the first challenging battle in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, including the Mid-Boss, Warriors, and Mages, with expert tips and strategies.

Alright, so you've made it to the first real roadblock in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness: the 'Enemies: (7)' battle. Don't let the name fool you, this isn't just a random encounter; it's your first taste of a boss fight, and it's designed to teach you a few important lessons. You'll be facing off against Lv. 6 Mid-Boss, two Lv. 4 Warriors, an Lv. 4 Archer, a Lv. 4 Green Mage, and five Lv. 3 Boggarts. This fight is pretty much mandatory to win before you can move on, so let's get you through it.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
You start in a room with a boss setup. Mid-Boss is chilling in the back, protected by two Warriors. Right in the center, you've got two red panels that give Enemy Boost x6 and Attack+1. These panels are key, but so are the three Geo Symbols right next to them. Your absolute first move, before anything else, is to deal with these Geo Symbols.
  2. 2
Set up three or four characters. Keep Laharl on your base panel for now. Create a tower with your other characters and then throw Laharl onto the square just to the left and below the line of the three Geo Symbols.
  3. 3
Once Laharl lands, immediately have him use Blade Rush. The goal here is to destroy all three Geo Symbols in one go. If you don't manage to destroy all of them, don't sweat it too much – just reset the battle. Seriously, if those Geo Symbols are still standing, this fight becomes way harder than it needs to be.
  4. 4
Assuming you wiped out the Geo Symbols, the battle gets much easier. Be careful for the first turn or two, especially with those Boggarts swarming near the entrance. Let the enemies take their turn, and then you can start going on the offensive.
  5. 5
Now, focus on the enemies on those red panels: the Archer and the Green Mage. Laharl's Blade Rush is great for this, Etna's regular attacks are solid, and magic or bow/gun users can also take them down from a distance. If you prefer a more aggressive approach, just move in and knock them out.
  6. 6
The two Warriors guarding Mid-Boss will fall pretty quickly. However, try to keep your characters out of Mid-Boss's direct range while you're dealing with them.
  7. 7
Mid-Boss is no joke – he's the toughest enemy you've faced so far. His HP is likely well over 100, possibly more than your Laharl can handle in a direct fight. Approach him with extreme caution.
  8. 8
Warning: Mid-Boss has a special attack called Adonic Blast. He can only use it once, but it's incredibly powerful and can wipe out a line of your characters. Stay aware of his range and try not to bunch your units up.
  9. 9
Also, avoid using regular physical attacks on Mid-Boss. He'll counterattack, and in a straight slugfest, he'll probably win. Stick to Laharl's Hurricane Slash and Etna's Sky Lunge. The key is to hit him hard and fast with your strongest special moves, ideally with multiple characters focusing their attacks.
  10. 10
Once Mid-Boss is defeated, he'll run away. Laharl gets all the glory (and the loot), and you'll watch some cutscenes. Congratulations, you've just finished Chapter 1!

After this battle, you'll get into Chapter 2. Before diving into the next mission, it's a good idea to visit Etna's secret room and read her diary. Then, head to the Dark Assembly. You'll want to have Laharl take the first two promotion exams – they're super easy. After that, petition to improve the shops so you can get better gear. Once you've bought whatever you need, you'll be ready to track down Flonne.
