Pathways into Darkness features a variety of items that the player can find and utilize. These items are crucial for combat, puzzle-solving, and progression through the game's twenty-five levels.

Items can be categorized as follows:

• Weapons: Used for combating monsters. Some weapons utilize different ammo types, such as HE and Sabot.
• Crystals: These grant special powers upon equipping and charging. Each use increases the recharge time, and eventually, the crystal shatters. The yellow crystal, used for conversing with the dead, is an exception and can be used infinitely.
• Potions: Consumable items that provide temporary effects, ranging from invincibility to time manipulation.
• Miscellaneous Items: These are often used to solve puzzles (e.g., the red cloak), are necessary for game mechanics (e.g., the map), serve as containers (e.g., the canvas bag), or have unique functions (e.g., the tinderbox).
• Treasure: Various valuable objects found throughout the game.

Additionally, picking up certain objects grants the player points. For every two points accumulated, the player gains one health point.
