Pathways into Darkness blends first-person shooter and RPG elements with survival horror conventions. Players must battle monsters, solve puzzles, and converse with the dead using a magic yellow crystal to uncover secrets and strategies.

Combat requires careful resource management, as ammo is scarce, monsters respawn, and players move at a similar pace to enemies. Health is regained by resting (which speeds up time) or rare blue potions that also cure poison. The player starts with only a handgun and survival knife.
