Learn about Monster Hunter Rise's quest structure, Village vs. Hub Quests, Low Rank vs. High Rank, and essential pre-hunt preparations for new hunters.

Monster Hunter Rise is structured similarly to previous games in the series. As a newly-registered Hunter, you’ll be tasked with completing various quests to advance the story and increase your Hunter Rank. These quests can range from delivering materials, culling small monsters, or hunting large monsters.

Quests have a star rating indicating their difficulty. To accept higher difficulty quests, you must first complete a certain amount of unique Key Quests, which have a special icon. Upon reaching the target number of Key Quests (progress shown on the HUD), an Urgent Quest will unlock. Completing this Urgent Quest bridges the gap to the next tier of quests.

Quests are divided into two categories: Village Quests and Hub Quests.

What are Village Quests?

These are solo-only quests available from Hinoa the Quest Maiden in Kamura Village. Completing them advances the story of Kamura Village and they are generally on the easier side, considered Low Rank.

What are Hub Quests?

These quests are geared towards multiplayer and are available from Minota the Hub Maiden in the Gathering Hub. Monsters in Hub Quests have higher HP that scales with the number of hunters. Quests from 1 to 3-stars are Low Rank; 4-stars and above are High Rank. Hub quests are designed to be challenging and are best undertaken with a full party.

Monster Hunter veterans can jump straight into Hub Quests, but playing through Village Quests is a good way to farm early equipment and unlock new features.

Difference Between Low Rank and High Rank

Low Rank and High Rank represent different difficulty classes. High Rank is tougher than Low Rank and applies only to 4-star and above Hub Quests. All Village Quests are Low Rank.

Game Flow

The core game loop is straightforward. The first hurdle is hunting your first large monster, likely the Great Izuchi in the 1-star Urgent Village Quest. Treat Monster Hunter like a fighting game; learn and practice your weapon combos in the training area or during safe quests before fighting small monsters.

Before hunting, make these preparations:

  1. Ensure your item pouch contains essentials like Potions, Mega Potions for health, and Rations or Well-done Steak for stamina.
  2. Upgrade or improve your weapons and armor using materials from environmental sources like ore or bones if monster materials are not yet available.
  3. Eat Bunny Dango at the canteen before heading out. This boosts maximum Health and Stamina and may provide other bonuses.

Finally, ensure you have ample time for the hunt.
