Solid Snake is the main protagonist of Metal Gear Solid. He is an ex-member of FOX HOUND who retired after the incidents of Zanzibar. Snake is an expert in stealth, infiltration, and rescue missions, and is well-trained to look after himself, armed or unarmed. He is also good friends with Colonel Roy Campbell, the man in charge of this operation, which is the only reason he agrees to take part in this mission. Snake is a real ladies' man, and his cool and calm attitude attracts everyone towards him, even though he is a professional killer.

• MEI LING {140.96}: Mei Ling is in charge of communications. Talk to her to save your game. She often provides vital information on your surroundings via satellite imaging and enjoys telling Snake old Chinese sayings. She is excited to be working with Solid Snake, whom she calls a 'Living Legend'.
• NASTASHA ROMANENKO {141.52}: Nastasha is the weapon and nuclear information analyst. Call her when you find a new weapon for detailed information. She is an expert in nuclear studies and becomes emotional about the subject due to losing her parents that way. The Colonel highly recommends Nastasha for information on using complex weaponry.
• MASTER MILLER {141.80}: Master Miller was a former survival expert in areas like Alaska and a close friend of Snake. He can provide vital information on surviving in the Alaskan cold and keeping focused on the mission. He is also an expert in Alaskan flora and fauna. Call him for information on the surrounding lands. Master Miller also provides moral support and occasionally pops up if Snake is feeling down.
• MERYL SILVERBURGH {140.15}: Meryl is Roy Campbell's niece and a soldier. She was called to the island just days before the current events. Snake must ensure she survives for his old friend Roy Campbell's sake. Meryl is not a rookie and can take care of herself, armed or unarmed. She provides useful information on the base and its operations. Snake doesn't want Meryl involved in the action as she is a rookie, or perhaps he has developed a soft spot for her.
• Dr. HAL EMMERICH {141.12}: When first met, he asks to be called Otacon. He is a big fan of Japanese animation and wanted to be a scientist to make the world a better place, but his employers were not. Otacon has vowed to help Snake in his mission. Contact him for information on the military base, Metal Gear, and more. He seems to have developed a liking to someone on the mission and asks Snake if love can bloom on a battlefield.
• DEEPTHROAT: Deepthroat transmits to Snake from within the Alaskan base. His agenda is unknown, but he seems to want to help Snake by contacting him in hopeless or dangerous situations to tell him exactly what to do. You cannot contact him yourself.
