Guide your way through Meryl's minefield in Metal Gear. Learn how to safely cross, find the sniper rifle, and prepare for your duel with Sniper Wolf.

Alright, so you've made it out into another big, open area. Before you get too far, Meryl's gonna stop you. Turns out, this whole place is loaded with mines! Luckily for us, when Psycho Mantis messed with her head, she got a peek at where they all are. She'll show you the way by walking across, leaving footprints for you to follow. She clears it like a champ.

Now, while following her works, there's a much easier way to get through this minefield: just crawl! It's way simpler and you'll avoid setting any of those nasty things off. Once you catch up to Meryl, things get intense. Someone's got eyes on her with what looks like a sniper rifle, and bam! Meryl gets shot three times. They're not critical hits, thankfully, just her arms and legs, but whoever this is, they're a seriously good shot.

Snake realizes he can't take on a sniper without some serious firepower of his own. So, he has to leave Meryl behind, bleeding and injured, and make a run for it to find a sniper rifle. Good news: Otacon pipes up and tells Snake there's one waiting for him back in the Armory, located in the Hanger.

RETURN TRIP

Okay, deep breaths. We've got to backtrack all the way to the Armory in the Hanger. Remember that area with the wolves? Equip that dog-piss-covered box you picked up earlier – it'll keep them from going after you. When you get to the Nuke Building B1 area, you'll want to make a mad dash for the elevator. You can totally make it without anyone spotting you if you're quick.

Once you're on the 1st floor of the Nuke Building, dodge the guard and sprint down the left side, head down the stairs, and make your way to the big gate. Back in the open minefield, stick to either the left or right edge. If you've got 'em, equip the Thermal Goggles or the Mine Detector – they make navigating this so much easier. Head into the Tank Hanger again. No annoying wires to worry about this time, thankfully. Quickly get to the elevator and take it down to B2, which is the Armory.

Inside the Armory, keep an eye on your radar. You'll see a guard patrolling near the door of a small room. It's in the top-left section of the map. That's where the sniper rifle is hidden. Take out that guard quietly using your SOCOM pistol, then slip into the room. The sniper rifle is in the back, but watch out – there are a couple of laser tripwires in there too. Crouch down and grab the sniper rifle without alerting any other guards or tripping those lasers. Once you've got it, it's time to head back the way you came, all the way to where Meryl got shot.

Your trip back shouldn't have any major surprises. But when you get back to that spot, you'll notice Meryl's gone. Her bloodstains are still there, though. And the sniper? She's still around, and it looks like you're about to have a duel. Get ready for Sniper Wolf.
