    A train arrives at a station. After some ne'er-do-wells and a man with a gun-arm (Barret) and a spiky-haired blonde (Cloud) depart, loot the nearby guard for a Potion.

    Head towards the next guard and you'll be attacked by two MPs. This is your introduction to combat. Use the "Attack" option.

    Defeat the MPs, loot the second guard for another Potion, and head up the stairs to the left.

    After your first battle, head to where your allies (Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie) are gathered.

    Engage in banter. You'll learn you were a member of SOLDIER and are now working with AVALANCHE.

    You'll get a chance to name your character (default: Cloud).

    Cloud exchanges banter with Biggs, then Barret arrives and gives orders.

    You'll get another chance to name Barret (default: Barret).

    Follow the path under a warning sign, through a checkpoint, and a doorway to reach the reactor.

    Inside, run along a ramp, take a right, follow another ramp to the reactor's interior.

    Head up stairs and reunite with Barret, Biggs, and Jessie. Barret will accompany you.

    Talk to Biggs to open a doorway, then talk to Jessie to open the next.

    Jessie runs ahead to a door control panel. Before following, head to the bottom-right room to find a chest with a Phoenix Down.

    Return to Jessie, talk to her, follow her into an elevator, and press the button she indicates.

    Exit the elevator. Head down steel stairs to the ground floor.

    Go through a door across from the stairs. Jump over a gap and talk to Jessie for a tutorial on climbing ladders.

    Follow the metal scaffolding, bypass a ladder (it acts as a ramp), and claim a Potion.

    Descend the ladder/ramp, climb another ladder, and follow a pipe.

    Cross more pipes and descend another ladder to a walkway.

    Nearby is a save point. Save your game.

    Proceed along the ramp to the reactor core. Investigate a glowing green sphere to obtain Restore Materia (cannot equip yet).

    Continue to the reactor core. Barret gives instructions, and Cloud receives a warning.

    Cloud sets the bomb, which attracts the attention of the Guard Scorpion.

    Boss Battle: Guard Scorpion. It uses "Search Scope", "Rifle", or its tail. Use "Attack" with Barret and "Bolt" with Cloud. After two rounds, it will raise its tail.
Tips
  • Combat Rows: You can switch characters by pressing [Triangle]. Barret has a long-range weapon and can attack from the back row without damage reduction, while taking less melee damage. Cloud does not have a long-range weapon and deals less damage from afar.
  • Switching Rows: Select "Order" in the menu and choose a character's portrait to move them. This is generally not necessary, as being in the back row slows Limit Bar charge.
  • Spells: Spells are considered long-ranged and deal full damage regardless of caster or target row.
