Learn to avoid the Midgar Zolom in final fantasy vii by catching a Chocobo. Get the Choco/Mog Materia and learn Chocobuckle.

Head south-east from Kalm, through a mountain pass, into the grasslands. Here you will find new enemies, the Chocobo Ranch, and Chocobo tracks. Enter the ranch and respond to the Chocobo's call with "Wark" to see them dance and receive the Choco/Mog Materia, your first Summon Materia. This wind-elemental summon can deal massive damage and can be paired with Elemental Materia.

Inside the farm house, an old man suggests getting a Chocobo to cross marshes and avoid the Midgar Zolom. He refers you to his grandson in the barn. You can also spend the night for 100 Gil.

In the barn, Choco Billy explains you cannot rent a Chocobo but can catch your own using Chocobo Lure Materia. You must feed the Chocobo greens while fighting its monster companions. Billy charges 2000 Gil for the Chocobo Lure Materia and sells "Greens". Buy the cheapest, ten Gysahl Greens for 100 Gil each, to start.

Chocobo Ranch Shop

  • Mimett Greens: 1500 Gil
  • Curiel Greens: 1000 Gil
  • Pahsana Greens: 800 Gil
  • Tantal Greens: 400 Gil
  • Krakka Greens: 250 Gil
  • Gysahl Greens: 100 Gil

In the menu's "Config" sub-menu, set ATB to "Wait" to pause ATB progression while selecting targets. In the "Item" sub-menu, "Arrange" items to move greens to the top for easier access in combat. Run near Chocobo tracks until one appears. Feed it greens with your first character, then defeat its monster allies. If you run out of greens, use more. Once enemies are defeated, the Chocobo is captured.

Learning Chocobuckle

To learn the Enemy Skill “Chocobuckle”, you need Mimett Greens (1500 Gil). Equip Sense Materia and Chocobo Lure Materia. Find a level sixteen Chocobo, feed it Mimett Greens, and cast L4 Suicide on it. The Chocobo will then cast “Chocobuckle” on you. This spell costs 3 MP and deals non-elemental damage that increases each time you flee from battles.

Tips
  • Hitting a Chocobo in combat will make it go berserk, deal minor damage to the party, and run away.
  • The Mimett Greens are a necessary prerequisite to provoking the Chocobo into casting “Chocobuckle”.
  • Choco/Mog Materia
  • Chocobuckle Enemy Skill (if specific steps are followed)
