Guide to Ebots Rock in Final Fantasy VI: Learn enemy stats, how to navigate the dungeon, collect coral for the talking chest, and defeat the boss Hidon.
Walkthrough
- 1Arrive in Thamasa and prepare for the dungeon. Consider purchasing Reflect Rings and general equipment upgrades.
- 2Strago's ex-partner, Gungho, contracted the insanity virus and failed to defeat Hidon, a legendary beast. Hidon and Ebots Rock were submerged after a previous fight but have resurfaced. Gungho is now incapacitated, so you will go in his place.
- 3To reach Ebots Rock, land your airship on the mountains north of Thamasa.
- 4Upon entering Ebots Rock, you will find it dark and difficult to see. Use the warps to navigate.
- 5You will encounter a talking chest that requires 22 pieces of coral.
- 6Collect coral from chests found in other rooms. Each chest contains 1, 2, 3, or 5 pieces of coral. You need to feed the chest exactly 22 pieces at once; feeding it in smaller increments will not work. Keep track of the coral you collect.
- 7After collecting at least 22 pieces of coral, feed the talking chest.
- 8Save your game at the nearby Save Point.
- 9Continue north from the talking chest to find Hidon.
Tips
- Strago is required for this dungeon. Relm is not. Consider bringing Terra, Celes, and Cyan. Locke is also an option, but having two healers is recommended.
- The dungeon is relatively small and navigation is not overly complex, despite the darkness.
- Warp points can be somewhat randomized, but finding coral is the main objective before the boss.
- Hidon is accompanied by four Erebus enemies. An Ultima spell can temporarily remove them for about a minute.
- Hidon's attacks include a basic Attack, Bio, Grand Delta (high damage to all), Leech (Drain), Venomist (party-wide Poison), and the ability to revive Erebus. He can also use Crypt Dust to turn KO'ed party members into Zombies.
- Before the fight, cast Haste, Kirin, Fenrir, and Mighty Guard. Slow is effective against Hidon.
- Use Ultima or Bahamut to defeat the Erebus enemies. Valigarmanda is also a good option.
- For offense, focus on spells like Fira, Firaga, Quake, and Holy. Throwing Flame Scrolls, using Holy Rods, or Flametongues are effective. Mog's or Edgar's Holy Lance can also be useful.
- Be prepared to heal frequently and cure Zombification.
- Hidon is considered weak at this point in the game. Grand Delta's damage, while significant, is manageable. White Wind can be used for healing.
After defeating Hidon, Strago celebrates his victory with Gungho. Relm reveals Gungho was faking his injuries, and the two stay to celebrate.
