You gain control of Celes in Cid's house. First, re-equip her with any gear you deem necessary. Exit the building and head towards the southern beach.

On the beach, you'll need to catch some fish for Cid. Walk into the water and approach the fish. Examine them to grab them. There are four kinds of fish: two that are good for Cid and two that are bad. The slow-moving fish seem to be the ones that kill him quickly, while the others prolong his suffering. Honestly, whether Cid lives or dies doesn't significantly impact the game's progression, but his death leads to a more interesting and deep cutscene. For the purpose of this guide, we'll assume you unintentionally kill him.

After catching the fish, return to the house and speak with Cid to feed him. It can take a while for him to pass.

Eventually, you'll enter the house and find that Cid has passed away. Celes will become distraught and flee the cabin, sobbing.

Later, Celes awakens on the beach. Head back into the house you started in. You'll find a letter from Cid on the ground. Read it.

After reading the letter, go down the staircase located near the stove. Here, you'll find a raft. Examine it to set sail from the island.
